OT Google Earth

Just fooling around here today and got on the Google earth site. Apparently they have taken new photos in our area because I can zoom down way closer than I could a few months ago. Now I can get to about 2000 ft eye altitude without it getting blurry. Our farm is at about 1000- 1150' elevation above sea level. I assume the eye elevation is also above sea level and not ground level. Well if anyone wants to look enter 40 39 12N 80 19 58W into the search box and it will (I think) take you to a photo centered about 4500' above a pasture just east of our barn. See all our small fields surrounded by steep woody hillsides. Post some coordinates for your places if you wish. Comments welcome. I like to view aerial pictures, especially ones with nice long contour strips and open country.

Our County PVA has a web site with a map. You just keep zooming in on where you want to look. Do not know the adress but it is the first hit if you google "webster county ky property". Do not know if every county has this or not. It will show property lines, and you can get a soil map overlay. It even tells you how many acres a place has in it. If a 200 acre farm if for sale but it is only taxed as 180 who it right?

Another source is Terraserver. Gives you the coordinates after you simply put in an address and goes right to that image. Images are also dated.

I've looked at my place on there too. It was a while ago and at the time I couldn't get as close as I can now with google. Lots of information out there. The more populated areas seem to have better resolution. I checked out my BIL's place in Yonkers NY. If he'd been outside smoking a cigarette I might have recognized him. (well not quite).

I'm sure this isn't the most efficient process but I typed the name of a nearby town into the Google earth search box, (maybe you can use the zip code also) and just moved the mouse around the area til I saw our farm. Then I zoomed in on it and kept moving the mouse to try and keep all my fields centered. Finally found an elevation that allowed me to see all the fields at once. I can zoom in closer but can't get a clear enough picture to count the slate on the roofs. You can read the coordinates at the bottom of the picture. Another way to find your place would be to click on the world globe that shows up in the beginning near to where you think your place is. then zoom in and movearound until something looks familiar and move to your place. Of course you could probably get coordinates a lot of other ways also like survey maps or topomaps etc. www.earth.google.com

That data is old even though it is "updated". By my best guess that had to have been taken in the spring of '04. Try 42 15 30N 79 16 30W to see my place although since then we built a new barn and there are a whole lot more acres that would be green. You can see all the equipment and the cows out grazing.

Nice place you have there. Is it dairy? I zoomed out enough to see Lake Erie and the PA/ NY line. What is the large lake to your west (small copared to Erie)? I guess the Kinzua reservoir is to your southeast, mostly in PA. You are right about the time of the photo, The field to the north of our house has white plastic mulch laid on it. I grew peppers there in 2004. Must have been late May or early June because I don't see any plants in the mulch.

The lake to the west is Chautauqua lake. Good fishing if you can put up with the lake crowd. And yes my farm is dairy. We had just moved there in April of '04. It's just amazing to see how much we changed in 2.5 years. It had to have been mid May as I can still see the windrows of hay that got rained on for about 10 days to the east of the farmstead.

The photos of our farm were taken in September 2005. I can tell by the cutting pattern of our hay field, our round bale storage, and the corn cut for silage.

The white car is a Buick Regal.

I use Google Earth to produce maps for our custom haying business as well as maps for hunting. I have the land owners outline their land so I know where I can and can not hunt.

Jim,

Now that is nice! What town(s) / cities are you near? I zoomed way out and there appears to be some development to your west and to the east a large dark green raggety something. Is that water colored or forest?

I'll have to chat with you sometime about wind and how dark it is at night. Around here we have so much development a really dark night only occurs when ther is a huge power outage, and even then all the industry has it's own power plants. But development is good for a farm market. Compromise, comprimise.

Jim, I used the tools/distance function in Google earth and found you are about 28 miles wsw from Ames and 35 miles nw from Des Moines. Is that close?

That is close. We are 8 miles North and West of Perry in the Southwest Corner of Boone County. There are only two houses in our section and the closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.

Phil, nice place! You are probably about 100 miles South of me. I"m about 12 miles West of Erie, and 16 miles East of the Ohio line. Try zillow.com , it seems to get a lot closer. ...Stan

I looked at Zillow.com. I'm not sure I could get any closer in our area but I could certainly move about (N-S and E-W) much faster than with Google earth.
