All the old non-powerstroke ford's I've driven have been dogs, the 6.9's and 7.3's. 175 hp maybe but no power and smokers on hills. Sure it will pull a load but for every day driving the Ford I6 motors would beat them off the line and up a hill.

The only truck my stock suzuki samurai used to be able to beat was my buddies 1989 F350 4x4 wtih 7.3 non-turbo.

Now when towing, that is another story but my other friends had chev 5.7's and his current is the 6L. He has a landscaping company and you can feel the 4000 lb trailer/tractor behind but will still climb hills fine with the od locked out. The two engines are pretty close.

When I tow his setup with the neigbours 4.6 L Ford it is noticable slower up hills but I don't hold up traffic, just makes the 4.6 spin pretty fast in 2nd gear.

The 4.6 L ford was also fairly loaded when towing our JD 336 baler up some 8% grades, I couldn't get much over 30 mph not that you'd want too. The baler is heavier than the truck I believe, maybe by 1000 lbs?

On the flip side, the 7.3 l ford will pull an 8000 lb haywagon load up the same hill at near the same speed but it doesn't seem to struggle at all.

I've got a 85 non-turbo IDI 6.9 which is kind of dog on power but it's a great running truck. But, I've also got a 94 IDI turbo 7.3 - NOT a Powerstroke - VIN code G, and it has all kinds of power - and does not "sit there and smoke" while pulling up hills. I'd take it over a Powestroke any day - mainly because most parts are much cheaper for it.

Is there a diesel model you don't have ? Your insurance agent must LOVE you. BMV too. LOL Sounds like you have a fleet.

I guess we do have a fleet - probably because I'm metally ill - but it goes like this. We keep six vehicles on the road at any given time - those six change when winter comes and all salt starts getting used - so it's actually twelve on the road one time of the year or another - but only six at a time. In all though, I think we have around two-dozen cars and trucks that are in good running condition. And not running - around thirty - many are just future projects that will never get done - e.g. 65 SS Chevelle, 60 Corvair Briarwood, 1918 Ford Model T, 1920 Ford Model TT, two Model As, two Model AAs, 65 MGB, 49 Ford F1 truck with flathead 255? Merc V8, 69 Power Wagon, etc. Insurance is $100 per vehicle for six months - total annual insurance for six vehicles is $1200 per year. And "collector's vehicles are cheaper - basically a flat rate of $150 a year for any amount of cars (within reason). When I reigster my 240Z, 280ZX, or MGB I do it that way. Motor vehicle inspection is another cost - $12 per year for diesels and over $20 per year for gassers. I've also got three diesel plow trucks - but there is a little cheating going on with them - no registration fees and no insurance. Also got over a 100 tractors. For that reason - I think I'm glad I don't live somewhere that has a personal property tax.

I would not want to have to change oil on all of your vehicles! It's hard enough getting my paltry 50 or so gallons of used oil and hydraulic fluids to recycling every year.
