Twice this year I have needed new parts for my 1978 off-brand tractor. I have a parts catalog, so the dealer put no effort into searching for part numbers. In neither case did the dealer have the parts in stock. In both cases, the service was prompt and courteous. All parts ordering was by phone. In both cases, the dealer never saw not touched the parts, the shipping was direct from the manufacturer to me. In the first case, the shipping charges were realistic. In the second case, the part was small, about the size of a jewelry ring box. It was overpacked in a slightly larger box to provide room for a label. In the latest, second, case the part was $22.07. The manufacturer charged the dealer $10.50 for shipping- it was on the packing list. Today, I get the invoice from the dealer and he charged me $15.00 for shipping, an extra $4.50. Plus I must pay 7% State sales tax on all of it! So my bill is $39.66. But this just strikes me as improper. How do you view this?

Next time call the distributor and not the dealer. Is it fair? No. Is it justifyable? Yes. They have to process your order and may have a minimum shipping charge to discourage folks from making "nuisance" small orders. You'd be surprised what internal processing costs add up to. I had to figure what it cost one company I worked for to process an invoice for payment and generate a check. Came to $27.00 back in 1995.
