I've Been Pondering Again

I'd like to put a salt/grit spreader in the back of the dump truck at work to aid the snow plow. I might have access to a very cheap fertilizer spreader box minus the running gear. Do those spreaders run off of PTO or hydraulics or both? The dump truck has a hyd. pump I could plumb into, but do you think it would have enough power to power a fert. spreader? It would only have to spread about 10 ft. wide. I'm thinking ag lime would be the cheapest stuff to spread on the roads, but I'm worried about it freeezing into a block and not being spreadable. Any ideas? I'm open to just about anything as long as it's cheap. Thank you much.

You want to use course sand with fine gravel. Anything else will cause rusting. A spreader doesn't use a lot of power but needs some. Your hydraulic tank might not be big enough for operating very long. If it is you could hook up an electric solenoid to run the spreader. I've seen spreaders that are pto and ground driven. They make hydraulic ones too that usually operate at lower hydraulic pressures. A hydraulic shop could help with setting it up. You would want to keep snow out of your sand. If it thaws and freezes, it will plug up the spreader. Hope this helps. Dave

Yeah I agree with you I don't really want to use salt. It'd be harder to come by and just makes a mess out of everything. I'm planning on going with ag lime unless I can get that sand/gravel mix you taked about. Isn't that stuff stored/delivered moist? And wouldn't it freeze?
