After traveling more miles than I care to think about, I decided to ask what you guys thing about this solution.

I am sure that most of you have had the problem with a seller not bothering to tell you about some obvious problems with an item that you are interested in while visiting about it on the phone.

Would it be possible to form a group of interested individuals that would inspect an item for you at a nominal fee. The fee could be negotiated depending on time and distance involved.

Pictures could be taken if requested.

A list of participants would be listed giving the approximant location and how they could be contacted. This list could be on this forum perhaps.

Would you take the time to tell me if you think this might work.

thanks

You'd do better by working up questions to suit what you want or expect and ask the seller yourself. If they can't answer to suit you or send pics then why travel to see it or buy sight unseen? You can't expect anything used to come with a warranty and that's why all auctions say sold as is and once they say sold it's yours as you saw it when buying it. If you want a real warranty then go buy a new one. Simple as that.

It seems that you may have missed my point. My purpose for this is to eliminate someone who doesn't tell the truth. Pictures always look better than when you are standing there looking at it in person. For instance, a picture may not show a cracked or repaired block.

I guess the bottom line is there is nothing that can be done to a person who doesn't tell the truth about the product they are selling. I spose I could do something to them that would get me arrested. If they paid me 50 cents a mile and for my time, that would be different.

An auction is a completely different set of circumstances.

If someone contacted me and asked me to to look
at an item for them in my area I would do it.
As long as they keep in mind that they are only
getting my opinion of the item. And pictures if I can.
Buying the item is still up to them.
I accept no liability for my free opinion.

I have always thought we should do this for each other.

I like the idea but don't think it would work. One of the main reasons I don't buy tractors/equipment that I don't look at first. One of the biggest problems I see would differance in opinion.

I don't think it will work. People would want you to spend time, travel, etc. and would not want to pay what it was worth. Way TOO MANY penny pinchers. Just imagine the time contacting the current owner, arranaging a time, getting directions, travel to-from, photos, strarting up, warmig up, testing transmission, shifting, oil conditions, 3-point, PTO, remotes, romputer time, time answering all sorts of questions by the "maybe" buyer, developing a contract, arranging pay in advance, lawsuits, etc, etc.. Tight wads would not want to pay $200 to $400 dollars, especially if they refused to buy. Tom

It wouldn't work for liabilty reasons. There will always be a flaw or defect that someone would miss, even with the best of intentions, then the buyer would want recourse from the guy who did the "inspection", as a favor.

The only way something like that would work is a "for pay" "licensed and bonded" type of thing.

I think it could work but a lot of details would have to be worked out. I would be willing to give it a shot. ( my e-mail is messed up right now, I can recieve, but I can't send)

I very seldom if ever had anything match up to my vision of it over the phone. I go look and if I can't I pass it up.

I don't know how you would know if you could trust the inspector ?? I have looked at plenty of rusted "RUST FREE" cars too.

I'd have to charge pretty good to do that. and then if you didn't like the tractor or didn't buy it would you still want to pay me? And then if I told you it looked pretty good and you found one small scratch on the fender would you be unhappy? Or what if something on it broke after you got it home? Or on the way home? I'm not sure I want any part of it. For a friend maybe, but not for someone I don't know.

The next time you want something "looked at", post on here and give it a try. See what kind of feedback you get. Can't hurt. If nothing else it may at least make you feel better informed to take off and make a trip yourself to see the sale item without feeling it's a wasted trip. Golden rule is and will always be DON"T BUY A TRACTOR YOU CAN"T TOUCH !!!! ( unless they ship it to your door for $1.00,all inclusive.)
