Thats what President Bush gave the Automobile Exects. the other day. To me that wouldnt finish my fries and super sized value meal. In my local area in the past 30yrs I saw a vast drop in employment in my area. In the day I Marine City, Mi. 1900's it was the ship building capital of the world, with unlimited vast oak trees to help with the effort. In the 1940's we had Motor Valve Co. making valves for tractors and cars and assisting in War Time Effort, we also had the Detroit Gasket CO. that employed the other half of the city. To the south of me we had the Chris Craft Boat Works in Algonac, Mi., to the North Diamond Chrystal Salt Co. And a Coco-Cola bottling works in St. Clair. Mi, to the North West we had the New Haven Foundry Co. that made engine blocks for Ag and the Constrution Industry. At I-75 and Mt.Elliot Ave . in Detroit is the old Packard Assembly plant, its 5 stories tall and 3 miles long, it made the bumpers, radio knobs, and seats, and assemeled in ONE plant! How many jobs? Folks we lost them ALL. We despratly NEED a turn around! Guys We are in a one state recession! They blame it on the unions, they blame it on fuel prices, they blame it on Michigan putting all its eggs in one basket. My 2cents worth is that NAFTA hurt Michigan in a wortst way that we can never get back to. Please give me your 2cents worth....DTURKE

mi isn't the only state with dip sheets in state house . tonight i read il is 46 out of 50 in job growth . cost of doing business is out of sight and getting worse . senate voted today to up mim wage to 7.50 per hour all that going to do is drive up price of hppy meals .

Yep...sick isnt it. But the big three dumb*ss*ss promised everything to everybody back in the hey day. The pension alone for the retired folks is amazing. (I will take a 401K anyday over a big company managed pension) now that people are living till 80 and retireing at 58 the companies cant pay out $1,000 to $2,000 per month. The health care for the retired is super expensive too. Dont forget that the employees get paid well too. My sister is an engineer at for one of the big 3. Holy cow her salary is real good + benefits + company car too (every 6 months). She isnt worth her pay, sounds rude but its true. The big three now have to compete in the world market place and the environmental *rap too, nobody wants a smoke stack in their neighborhood. Gas prices are too high and the trucks arent selling good anymore. I could go on and on but I wont.

Yes but our woman Governor said in FIVE years we are going to be blown away. Thats all we heard in the campaign ads. It seems like we been blown away already. I cant wait FIVE years. How about you.

Michigan's problems are huge, far more than enough blame to go around. And there's plenty of that for politicians, unions, business leaders, federal govt, and others. Gonna take more'n Jennifer's promises!

I am from Michigan too. I agree the big 3 guys got nothing substantial from Bush. He is too tied into the multinational corporate structure. But having said that, manufacturing is dying in this country, all over this country. The big issue is health care. It is a tax on employement. But all this should be on the other board.....

What do you expect? The "Big Three" doesn't even exist. Its actually "The Big Two" now that Dodge is a foreign owned/controlled corporation. My next car will probably be a domestic manufactured Hundya instead of a Mexican made Ford.

The companies and jobs most likely headed to the southern US states that have Right to Work Laws
and workers that aren't used to the extremely high union wages.Things are booming here.

I don't consider Iowa to be one of the southern states, but Iowa does have the Right to work law. Guess what? The manufacturing jobs are leaving Iowa also, and there is nothing coming in to replace those jobs. All of our jobs either have gone or are going to China.

That was more than they deserve-when you build shoddy products, have fat cat labor contracts, poor management, etc. The UAW destroyed the auto industry-The local ford plant is full of drug heads and alcoholics-the local saying is that unless you are in rehab they will not hire you. One local guy was drinking a quart of whiskey a day on the line. When his supevisor came along he would drink right along with him. This all along while they are selling F150's for 35000. What a pathetic joke.

Aloha, A lot of this is because of EPA strict regulations. The big industries move to a foreign country not only because of cheap wages, but it is mainly because of pollution.

When Ross Perot was running for President a few years ago one of the things he said was, "The giant sucking sound you hear will be jobs and money leaving the country if NAFDA is implemented." He sure was right about that and now we are feeling the results of NAFDA.

The politicians were bought with the big companys money and they voted the way the companys wanted them to vote. Now we are in a huge mess and I dont see any easy way out. You cant compete with some guy in another country working untold hours for pennies a hour, with no health benifits or retirement any OSHA protection. There are no easy answers, and I hate to see what the good old USA will look like in another 20 years if we dont get this problem solved.

Same thing happening in Arkansas. Afew years ago our shoe factory closed left about 500 unemployed, and we all know where most of the shoes and boots are now made. Now we have learned that Waterloo, that manufactures tool boxes is closing next year. Waterloo built a factory just over the border in Mexico, workers from the Pocahontas plant had to go to mexico and set up equipment and train the mex's to do the jobs and now the Pocahontas plant is closing. Another 700 unemployed. Pocahontas is a town of just over 6000 in population. not much fair about that.

I agree with the first part of you statement, but you contradict yourself with the second part. Morons and losers should be paid what they're worth instead of giving them "good paying jobs".

the companys are going to go where they can make the most money,and the people here are going to buy where they can save the most. this country has to wakes up and starts supporting usa made. big companys have the money to buy politicians, but we have the buying power for the product,use it.
