I have switched to synthetic in many older vehicles with high miles (one at 175k miles, one at 100k, etc.) with absolutely no problems. No increased consumption, no new leaks, nothing.

I run my 42 H on Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 and change it once a year. Works just fine. Go for it!

I am not an expert but, I use Mobil One in all my 4-cyle gas engines (7 of them) for about 10 years, including my Ford 641. I have had no oil related problems with any of them. I have 180,000 on a Buick LaSabre and recently did a compression check. It tested to factory specs. There are several excellent oils available. One of the posters on this forum, who is a lot smarter than am I, has a lot of infomation on another product

I've used it in my 9n this summer, and it worked fine, except that it now weeps from about every gasket on the engine.

Just more proof that it is a superior lubricant, if it can find it's way out through a gasket , then it will find it's way where it needs to be a lot better too.

That's kind of the way I am thinking. Sometimes the old oil pump is a little slow building pressure, and I like the idea of a better lubricant still setting on the bearings.

Maybe thats proof its so hot its thinner than water and cant be lubricating much at all.At 7.50 a quart any leakage is really costing ya.

It's a proven fact that thin oil circulates where it needs to be quicker and with less load on the engine to pump it. The only reason anyone needs 50 wt oil is in their head. I don't know of ANY engine that was ever designed for 50wt oil or needs it. Back in the day when oil was a dinasaur and viscosity couldn't be held at heated temps, then they may have needed 50wt so that at temps it would thin to 20wt and THEN would be a good lubricant. You have something else going on in that Ducati besides just a change in oil type. You are not doing it any favors by running 20W50 in it either.

If you choose to use it, it should be fine. For your tractor, I think it cost more than it will be worth.

Why would it run hotter?

All I know is when I put it in my air cooled Ducati it buried the temp guage. Before that on 20w-50 Pennzoil it never went past 3/4 mark.So I paid 7 dollars and something cents for Mobil one special V-twin oil[Ducati is a 90 degree V-twin engine and it was all the auto parts store had in 20w-50].So I paid way more and heat went up more than ever before.Ill take my cheaper mineral oil back now please.Perhaps air cooled motors are more sensitive to good lubrication and this may not apply to the tractor.I still cant see the extra expense.

I wondered the same thing, why would it run hotter? Everything I have run synthetic in tends to run cooler, I assume because of less friction. Less friction, less heat. Less heat, longer life, more power..... .and so on.

Less friction means less heat.

Just my personal oppinion,I think it clings to parts longer than regular oil,and therefore, on old tractors that might only start once a week or month , I believe there will be more and better lube where it needs to be when you need it most. Same for classic cars. I use it! Some have other opinions. Your question was "will it hurt", NO!
