I need a reciver hitch for my truck, so that I can use a drop hitch to pull a bumper pull trailer.. my question is do you think this would work, in the picture what is marked red is gone, and the yellow arrow is where I would weld a square tube for the reciver.. think it would work? some say the hitch would not be safe for highway use, but I have pulled a loaded hay wagone with no problem, mind you this is a wagone that sways and jerks really bad.. so what do you think? thanks for your input! I bought a like new, receiver hitch for $40 at a salvage yard that bolted right onto my Ranger. It had been sold by Uhaul, was quality and I would not have thought of going to a salvage yard for it but saw it when getting other parts. It easily saved me $40 worth of time as opposed to fabricating one.

If you cut that off and that center tounge out too it should work fine. Just be sure to move the square tube in far enough and gusset and also angle some heavy iron braces from existing bumper forward to frame so it won't fold under with heavy tongue weight on it. I've done several of the el cheapo bumpers by cutting out the center and ended up with something heavier than could be bought. If that's a air tank type bumper you have now and mounting irons are only welded on outside you need to start over or find something else though because it will pull off. Check junk yards and might find something ready to go?

What works well when adding a square hitch to a truck frame is.....weld a length of 2" tubing(4 to 6'long) from the front end of the hitch tube on to a cross member using a 4 or 5" piece of 3/8" angle to the front end and bolt it to the cross member....bolt the angle on then weld the 2" tube on that way it is bolted soild and level, tube can be weiled at a angle.....result is a very strong hitch.....

Pulling a wagon will not be a problem, however, if you tow anything that actually puts weight down on the hitch, you will have problems. I would suggest a commercially built hitch that bolts to the frame of the truck, or better yet, scrounge up some iron and build what you need. Build it extra heavy duty, and then you can transport some of the big farm equipment also.
