After pulling 20 hours straight yesterday, and getting up today on 5 hours sleep, that is quite long shift to be on your feet. Final push to meet a deadline, but my client's new office space is ready for moving in today, after 4.5 days of some grueling work, start to finish, +listening to the nay-sayers wondering if we would be done, quite mentally and physically hammered over here today. I guess it was worth it, just can't leave a job until it's right, sometimes that makes for a long day.

Always enjoy the reading here, what everyone is doing, photos, you name it, but was curious, what was your longest day, why and how did you feel after and what did you accomplish ?

just got home....left at 4am and round tripped Midland, TX from Needville today (just south of Houston). 1088 miles in 20 hours including picking up a car trailer and loading the car. This run wasn't subject to DOT. ..... hehehehehe

Running my own trucking company gets a little long winded on the hours sometimes when you are the mechanic, driver, accountant, etc. for 3 trucks.

Pulled a couple of 24+ shifts in college, too. Makes you old fast....

That 4400 diesel JD was purring like a kitten, and so comfortable in the cab,I had all I could do to stay awake.

Oh you'll live and be fine lol. Just learn to take advantage of little cat naps when you can sometimes. At FD they would send us home for 12 hours after 72 straight but you could sneak a nap here and there if not too busy but sometimes you kicked yourself for taking overtime.

Those kinda hours sounds like the Doc. and nurses do. It's no wonder the high amount of medical mistakes made.

About 30 hours- trouble on 360/50 mainframe at work toward end of shift, disaster backup transfer to IBM data center to continue weekend processing, haul back when company mainframe fixed and do another shift. working 13/14 hour shifts now but short week- Personnel/payroll uses me as example of runaway overtime since I blew payroll program twice by logging more than 99 hours in week- someone else-supervisor or manager on salary- is supposed to cover after I do a couple extra days on someone elses shift or holiday. Corn picking was about 20 hour days, seed corn had to be in before hard frost. Worked couple jobs tax season- about 20 hours a day between jeep shop and tax prep computer. RN

Ya, you can put in some really long hours clearing snow. You feel like a sombie and you're so tired, you can't fall a sleep when you finally get a chance. Dave

I've worked many 20 hour days on the farm - not hard physical labor, though. Sitting in (or on) the tractor to get the crop in, or harvested seems to be the really big push in my experience. When working for a friend in the haying business, would get up at 3:00 AM to rake hay until about 5, then bale until noon, then cutting until about 9:30 PM. Did that for about 13 days in a row, then got rained out for a couple days of catch-up sleep.

Spent a few days driving for 18 to 20 hours as well. That 1500 mile trip home used to be a 3-day affair, but we've trimmed it to 2-days. Hoping the next time the Mrs. comes along we can drive straight through.

When I was in college I worked for IBP as a meat cutter. In the summer of 1986 they were working some serious overtime. I'd usually work normal shifts during the week but on the weekends I'd make some money. On Friday mornings I would get up to make the 4:15 start up, and work a double 10 hour shift and get off work at about 3:00 am Saturday morning. Usually I'd go out and drink a few beers with the my roomates then eat breakfast. I'd take a quick shower and go back in for the 5:15 startup on Saturday. I'd work work two 10 hour shifts and get off at 4:00 am Sunday morning. That summer I was averaging 24 to 32 hours of overtime a week.

Now they say that "work Americans won't do".

The longest day wasn't me but my wife. About 12 years ago she worked for a company that had about 200 people in this area plus more in Fla. She had learned the computer network from reading it out of a book (on her own time) becouse they were to cheap to hire someone better or send someone to school to learn. She went to work at 8AM on a Thursday morning. The system went down around 10 that morning. There were 3 of them who worked from 8AM Thursday to 11AM Sunday (76 hrs.) to get it back up. No sleep. She got home about 11:30 Sun. morning, took a bath and got ready to go to bed when the phone rang and her boss (who had not stayed with them) said to come back becouse there was more problems. She, mad as a wet hen now, got dressed and headed back (30 min. drive). She had been gone about 5 min. when a co-worker called (mad as the same hen) and said they could take care of the problem, and that there boss was a jerk, and for her to stay home and sleep. Well no cell phones in this house back then so I could not contact her. She had to drive down to find things working then drive back home so add about 1 1/2 hr. to the 76 plus 1/2 going to work on that Thursday morning. That adds up to 78 hours. She did not get one extra penny for the extra work. I may as well get this off my chest while I am at it. This company made her wear a pager 24/7. I don't know how many times we were at one of our kids games when it went off. She would have to find a phone to call in. Well she found out after about a two years that if someone with that company is required to carry a pager they are to be paid $100.00 per week. She went to HR and ask about it. So what they did was take her pager on Fri. at 5PM and give it back Mon. at 8AM. Very few people worked weekends so hardly any calls. Never was paid a cent or a thank you.

Sorry for this rant but I have waited 12 years to vent this.

Left one morning at 7 am came in 52 hours later, it was nothing to work 36 hours straight.. Guess the most time worked in one week was 16 hours straight..80 in 5 and 32 sat and sun, makes an old man out of you quick...You always hear how large companies will on work you so many hours in a day, thats bs worked there 24 years till they sold the pipeline, the company that bought it did not use Maintenance people.. I was foreman and had 3 crew part of the time, most of the time one..covered from 250 miles north to south. left lots of mornings at 4 am or earlier...see i was only a number to exxon lol. they are just like other companies they want nothing but green and employees are just numbers...

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

Back in the day....20+ years ago on an off-shore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, 44 hours at one time and 144 hours for the week, there are only 168 hours in a week, so we didn't sleep much... I have pulled 24 hr shifts at present job twice in 14 years and several 18 hours and have to be back in 6 hours, but this is NOT physical work. Two weeks ago, narrowly missed a 24 hr shift and got called in for night shift this past Monday at 3:pm, had been working around the yard all day, no nap, but I made a good one, driving 50 miles home was hard though.

36 hrs of discing and planting during a break in Spring weather. I remember driving home at night and stopping because (I thought) I saw a grand piano in the road. (Bill, that's why they didn't let you drive home.) I was beat but the seeds were planted. The worst is when you bust your tail and you don't end up successful.

Back in 1981/82 I was a project engineer installing a new plastic extrusion line. It was one of those "If you don't get it going - there's no tomorrow" things. I started at 8AM one day and worked continuously until early afternoon the next day which was about 30 hours straight.

Now, I can hardly put in an ordinary day.

26 hours straight, 75 hours for the week, back in 11/1994 when I was 25 years old. It is nice to work your a$$ off when your young, keeps you out of trouble.

50+ hours trying to keep a high pressure well under control and not have a blowout. Through the grace of God and modern chemicals, I made it.
