If you plan to go with Mircosoft because of the greater availability of programs, remember the new operating system "Vista" is coming out next year. Make sure your new machine is "Vista Compatible" or you won't be able to upgrade. There are different system requirements and some XP machines won't run Vista. Have fun.

Mac is cool stuff. But if you have special business software you need, like special ag software - can be difficult or impossible to find. But for just writing letters & doing internet & basic stuff, they are a step ahead. Better machine, less software. Depends what you need to do....

I've bought maybe 10 Dells for myself & other friends, all working pretty good. I got a Toshiba laptop last year as well, works fine.

My wife has had 3 Macs, going to get her a new one this weekend.

I just built up a new system, and I'm pretty happy with it. Used an MSI P965 Platinum motherboard and an Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 CPU. If you decide to go with an Intel-based computer, I highly recommend the Core 2 Duo CPU over the older Pentium D processors as they are faster and use half the power.

I use Windows at work, and I can say the Windows XP is the first version of Windows that deserves to be called an operating system. But just barely. It still is far too insecure to be plugged into the internet.

I have not used the newer OS/X-based Macs, but I'm certain this operating system is a lot more solid than any version of Windows out there. OS/X is based on the NEXTSTEP operating system which was in turn based on the Mach operating system. For all intents and purposes OS/X is a variant of UNIX.

Personally, I use Linux, another UNIX variant. I do not have to worry about computer viruses. For all intents and purposes, viruses are a Windows problem. This is partly because of the popularity of Windows, but it is mostly due to lack of any sort of real security in the Windows operating system. If you run Windows, viruses and other malware are just a fact of life.

I switched to a Mac almost two years ago and would definitely never go back to Windows.
Biggest reason-There's no need to worry about virus, firewall, or spyware gadgets.
2nd reason- It's designed for non-geek consumer use.Learning the new operating system is a breeze and I'm well north of 50.

Their e-mail system filters out most spam automatically.
Plus now, their new '07 computers can run Windows programs if you want.

I am a PC guy. That's what I am familiar with and that's the main reason. Unlike some others, I have had several computers, desktops and laptops, over the years, all Dells...and never really had any problem with any of them.

I would steer away from emachines, HP, Compaq, etc...I have had friends/neighbors with these machines, but they don't have them for long.
Right now I am banging away on a dell with a boatload of "miles" on it....and it still functions like it did when I first got it.

Windows XP is the ticket, and don't get involved with a cheap processor like a Celeron.

I have nothing bad to say about macs, just never had one. I would try one without hesitation, I guess, if money was no object.
It does seem to me that folks who go Mac never go back...either that or they just like to be different. (?)

Have a 6 month old Dell, with Pentium 4 HT and it hangs up ever time I come out of standby and start IE. Wish I had a mac.

Hi -

You might try disabling the "turn off hard drive", "system standby", and "hibernation" options in power options in the control panel.

The wakeup function is flaky on a wide range of brands.

I work in IT and it that is just a problem in a lot of them. I like to leave the "turn off monitor" to 20 minutes (or whatever you like), since it is easier on the monitor...

I'll vote in for the Macs too.

Used to provide desktop support for them and with windows things were never easy, and the Macs just worked. And virtually no viruses on them is nice too in todays world.

they do it all elegantly and reliably.

Ummm I didn't think I would be talking about computers on this page, but I would like to put in my two pennies. I teach desktop publishing in high school and produce a 400 page yearbook with students working on 18 Macs. For graphics, ease of use, stability, and extras you can not beat Mac. I have never had a virus in my lab, and very little trouble considering all the use they get. I have to fund my equipment by making money off of advertising in my yearbook, no school board money. The school board signed some oppressive deal with IBM so they wouldn't even buy me Macs if they wanted to. They offered me all new PCs one year and I turned the offer down. Smartest thing I ever did. The school system is a headache of problems. A note about the other post. The new Macs DO NOT COME WITH CLASSIC. OS 9 is offically dead. But if you are new to Mac no worries. You wouldn't have classic software anyhow.

Good point! If I were a whole bunch younger and started on OSX I would never miss classic..... ..gee, I can"t believe what I just said. Thank you, sir! You have set me free of my guilt for turning my back on 9.2.2!

Well, I've got both Macs and PCs but the PCs haven't been turned on for a year or so. You are probably aware of the fact that Mac went to a Linux-based operating system or OS 10 several years ago. Up until then Macs ran what is now know as Classic. I was stuck on Classic; really like the same old things I guess BUT I finally made the switch and am really getting used to it now. By the way, new Macs can still use Classic (and old Macs can use Tiger), they just can't boot from it. I do not want to start a war here but it's true that Windows is a patch that allows the 'IBM System' to present itself as a Mac. The newest Mac OS 10 update, called 'Tiger', is VERY stable and seamless. There are some things that are a bit unnerving to new Mac users, like dragging CDs and other devices such as digital camera icons to the 'TRASH' to unmount them. You can of course use the drop down menu to 'EJECT' but it's quicker and more fun to just TRASH IT! Don't worry, Macs won't let you get rid of anything for real without asking your permission once or twice. One thing for sure is that there is, at this time anyway, much more readily accessible software for PCs. It's out there for Macs but you have to look a bit harder for it. This situation however, is improving daily as Linux-base appears to be the coming thing. AND, up until 1998 there were NO viruses that affected (infected?:->) Macs. then some genius came up with the AutoPlay virus which will only get into your Mac if you don't go into the System and turn off the Auto Play DVD feature. This still allows CDs that you insert to start automatically for some mood music; while you do your taxes, for instance. I would highly recommend one of the ''Macs for Dummies' books to help yourself out of the 'I have no idea what to do next' syndrome as you're learning. I especially like the Dummies books by David Pogue because he's got you laughing at your situation where you wanted to be crying! At any rate, find a Mac that you can test drive for a while and then decide. Macs and PCs are beginning to get along it seems. The link is to Wikipedia's info on Linux.

I am partial to the Apple computers since I have worked with them for over 15 years. Ease of use and almost virus free help keep our 10+ Macs here at work going all the time.
They now come preloaded with all kinds of software for the home user, and it is all easy to use. Almost all the arguments about compatabilty between Windows & Macs is gone. And if you want you can also run the Windows operating system on your Mac, so you are getting 2 computers for the price of one.
