My 35 year old son had been experiencing a lot of back pain; leg even goes numb especially after spending time on tractor.

Has now been told he has Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) and Artifical Disc Replacement (ADR) is being recommended. Not many done in USA yet and Blue Cross considers it expermental and won't pay for such ($80 to $100,000).

I've been told a place called Senum Hospital near Bremen,Germany specializes in this ADR procedure. Wondering if anyone out there have had any experince with this place or know of anyone who has??? Would like to get in touch with anyone that has ADR!!

Wondering what experiences others of you might have with DDD.

Thank you

FWIW: I too had lower back problems that really started killing me just over a year ago. Tried chiropractic treatments for 4 months. Tried special exercises recommended by doctor. Tried epidural steroid injections. Finally by May I could no longer walk. Affliction was called (acquired spondilothesis) along with several other problems in lower back. Found an excellent neurosurgeon here in Lake Charles,Louisiana. Finally had surgery on 19 June. Am now walking 4 mile a day and depending upon whether or not fusion of L4,L5,,and S1 vertabrae has completed,I will be released for work by the end of next week. Doctor had told me at outset that healing process would be 6 to 18 months and at my age,(59) probably more toward the 12 to 18 month time frame. I didn't realize just how much I had been in pain for the past 10 or more years until about a month after the surgery when the pain from the 7 hour surgery started clearing up. I would opt for surgery again and would recommend it for anyone when they get as bad as I was and nothing else helps. Also, I would recommend a neurosurgeon rather that an orthopedic surgeon. As others have said, there is no magic cure all, but I feel I have found the closest substitute. Biggest problem I've had is listening to doctor and not doing anything to "blow out" the surgery before it is completely healed. HTH God Bless. Bob Da. (La)

About mid way through the summer my lower back and legs stiffen up. I stretch my thighs like a buddy of mine told me to do because he pointed out that from sitting the legs stiffen up and pull on your back muscels. Can't beleive how good that works.

Surgery, especially disc replacement, is a last resort. If he is able to run a tractor, he should wait until he can't. Try a physical therapist who is McKenzie certified or has some of the McKenzie training.

I had lower back surgery at age 35, L5 S1 was blown out and pinching my nerv off. Never had bad back pain just leg hurt like hell. Was doing great for 10 years. Know all of a sudden my other leg started hurting back in December of 05'. They tell me know it is from degeneration of that disc.I have tried all kinds of things in the last year to make it go away. Nothing has helped. I was told not to do the disc replacement because of not so great results. I would do the fusion before I would do the replacement. My best sugestion for your son is to get different opinions.I have seen a lot of doctors in the last year and i have found some to be worthless. Ultimately It's his choice. Im seeing my doctor tomorrow to set a date for surgery.

I have a 5 level lower back fusion. Before the surgery I could hardly get around. Now 3 years later I can say the surgery was an improvement. But it is far from a 100% recovery. I still have plenty of pain. The bottom line is I"m better than I was and would do the surgery again if I had that choice. It"s a life long problem, that you just have to learn to live with.

I wish that they could come up with a complete spine replacement. I've got problems with my neck plus lower back that affects my legs. When I inquired about surgery, they told me that it offered a 50% chance of improvement, 25% of not helping, and a 25% chance of getting worse. Every time I seriously think about surgery, I dig out a clipping for a fund raiser regarding a rancher that is paralyzed from the neck down following such surgery.

Get him on Glucosamine Chondroitin. Pick it up at Walmart or any vitamine store. Hyaluronic Acid or somtimes refered to as HA adds moisture and elasticity to your joints. Glucosimine is a sulfate and your joints are made of sulfer so it feeds them. This stuff works if you eat them like candy and have patience to let a few bottles do the trick. Your son has a more seriouse medical condition and of course do what the doc recomends also. If you want to get serious about joint repair you can do what the NFL players do along with the rest of the world except Americans and get DMSO. It is a sulfur byproduct of paper manufacturing so it cannot be a profit source for drug companys hence no reason to study and market somthing you can't profit from. Go to the AG co-op and ask for it. It comes in a roll on and people use it for joint problems in animals. It is classified as a stong solvent so do some research on Google for your safty. Unfortunatly you will pull up some studys where they interveniously injected high doses. Don't be fooled you will only roll on small amounts right on your joints. This stuff is majic and with it and HA, MSM, Glucosamine and Condroitin a lot of people could eliminate back pain and joint replacements. Really this advise will change lives. It did mine.

Yep DDD is no fun to live with. I've had the problem for 10 plus years and they removed one disc about 10-11 years ago. I have less pain in my legs but more pain in my lower back now. All I can say is if a person can he shold avoid back surgurys at all cost till he just can't live with out it and then your disabled from that time on or at least thats how it worked out for me.

DDD, no thankfully I dont have that but I do have 3 different fusions in my back (motorcycle). I had to spend money on seats to keep functioning. Good air ride seats run better than 1500 each but they make the days tolerable. Forget the old pan seats, I spent an hour on an M last year and the swelling in my lower spine shut down my legs for a week. I sure do wish him the best if he chooses surgery. One of the things the docs told me at 39 when they fixed my knee was that as far as bone and soft tissue repairs went once you past 30 you were an old man, and it just takes a lot longer to heal that sort of stuff up.

Get two or three opinions. For additional info research "Stenosis of the spine".. New procedure(s) may help.

Wearing a back support will help relieve the pain. I got mine at Lowe's and cost about $20.00. I wear it anytime I plan on driving for extended times... Gene

I have been living with DDD for 11 years or more , My grandfather was 100% disable at 50 with DDD . Seems to run in same family . I take mild pain releaver & mussle relaxer . helps some but have hard time getting started in morning used to get up ready to go now takes longer . there isn't a day that goes by that back doesn't hurt just have to learn to live with it . Beats the alternative .

Sign of hard work, the discs just wear out. Ive got two, friend has five. Operatins are 50/50 sucessful, after 3-5 years. I live with mine. You have to train yourself to never lift anything heavy for ever, no more hard work. The disc above or below will deteriorate, and it only gets worse. Get a second opinion. Rest is best, walking willhelp or hurt it, try it, medication will be needed occassionally. Many with this same problem, hope he feels better.

10 years ago I fell and hurt my back. I was diagnosed with a compression fracture of t-12. Surgery was no reccomended. A few years later another doc called it severe arthritis. I am not able to do much and have to be careful of what I do.Fortunatly, I was close enuf to retirement age to get SSD and later a full SS check. I have been threatning accupuncture to see if that would give me some pain relief. I have excercises I am supposed to do daily. Plus I do Tai Chi 3 times a week at the Sr.Center.
