Back in the early '50s my dad had a cedar swamp bulldozed off, and wanted to disk it with a very heavy disk-tiller. Old thing weighed a whole bunch, had 5 blades, and cut a whole 4 foot swath. Was about all the old '47 JD B wanted to pull, but two passes on sod, and it wasn't sod anymore. Of course, on muck, the tractor was sinking right now. Dad reasoned that if he could dual up a set of steel wheels that were slightly smaller than the rubber tires, when the rubber tires started to sink, the steel ones would start to add traction, and keeping it from sinking any further. Well, he never got the steel wheels, but was able to come up with a matching set of rubber tired wheels, to those already on the tractor, slid the existing tires in on the axle, and slid the second set right on the axle outside the first set. Instant duals. Got the disking done fine, and didn't get stuck.... Got a lotta laughs from the locals while he had the tractor parked in the yard. Funny, no one's laughing over the tractors their grandsons are driving today - duals, triples, 4wd, track - you name it, no one's laughing.
