MF-150 odd engine behaviour?

I've got an MF-150 here that seemed like it was only running on 3 cylinders (out of 4)(Continental Z-145). Took the rocker cover off and found a dislocated push rod, reconnected it. Previously there was no power, rough running, and it was very smoky and blew oil out the exhaust. Now there doesn't seem to be any smoke, and it's a lot smoother but there's still very little power and it makes a noise under load. It sort of sounds like pop corn popping and only when you've lugged the rev's down. It also seems to be non-rythmic, as in not in time to any particular part of the engine. Currently the compression's in the region of 150-180psi. I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas, many thanks, tractorsam

What caused the push rod problem? How did you raise trhe compression ratio?
Push rods do not just get "dislocated".
Just relocating it may not be the answer. It may be bent or something else broke/worn - like a cam lobe. Are the valve springs becoming coil-bound?
Of course those compression figures are only relative - guages are notorious for inaccuracy. If that compression figure is the range, you have too wide a range. If it is a guess, it"s probably wrong.

I'm pretty sure the push rod problem developed due to a previous owners inability to adjust the valves. They were that loose it looks like some of them were set with a ruler, about 1/4"+ gap on a couple. I have not raised the compression ratio, it just that the readings seem rather high to me. Supposedly the previous owner had someone rebuild the head and everything else looks reasonably decent up there. The compression range comes from doing several tests on the engine at different times. Sometimes the readings were down to 150psi, and one of the recent ones reached ~180psi. Many thanks, tractorsam

I was wondering about that, any chance with compression like that that it might require more than the standard octane gas? Does anyone know where the timing marks are on this engine? Many thanks, tractorsam
