The emerald ash-borer beetle has been spotted in the county adjacent to ours. Do any of you guys in the east have any experience with infestation? Should I expect it to kill all of our ash trees?

We have some dandy trees that I would really hate to lose.

I"m located in Southwestern Ontario, Essex County, and trying to stop this bug is impossible. The Ministry cut a KM wide strip to try to stop it between Essex and Kent counties and it did no good.

It"s like the Energizer bunny, it just keeps on going.

Good Luck

Here in Southern MAryland they are becoming a problem. The county wants to clear cut several thousand acres to try to rid the problem.

I like you have been hoping they would by-pass me. I have two dozen or so 20 inch and up, very tall and very straight. They got in to them this year and I"m sick. Will probably have them sawn into board stock. There isn"t much market for ash even though it"s similiar to oak in looks and hardness. Stains up nicely. So I"ll have a small mountain of boards that I can"t bear to burn in the woodstove, but probably will have a tough time selling. A while back there was a post on this board that had a link to a product by Bayer that you pour around the base. I did the math and it would have been a small fortune for me to try it. It wasn"t known just how effective it is on large trees. Good luck, Gus

Ash can be used to replace oak.Ive run ash for door and window trim, cabinet stock and flooring. It is very hard to tell the difference between ash and red oak after they have been sawed for a while. You could buy a small band saw mill and saw it your self.Or hire it sawed and get it under cover. Then find a market.

Do a search for Emerald ash borer and see what insecticides work best, I am sure that toxic chemicals will kill this bug if the tree is sprayed correctly.

YES.

If tree is alive and you want the lumber, cut and saw this winter.

This one is another dutch elm type. If it does not get the tree this year just wait it will. Thank China for another one. Americans want cheap goods at the store. With the 100 billion plus dollars of China goods each year comes new bugs. Asian long horned beetle was a good start of tree eaters from China. Chicago program spent 75 million in 8 years. Eradication was reach. Not so for NY city. The ag laws of NY state have hand cuffed the survey work. Can't get on the property to inspect.

Aluminum bats will make it to the majors thanks to the emerald ash bore.

NO treatment will work. SO don't let a want a be show up at your door and sell you and rat killing type treatment. Spends most of its life cycle inside this tree.

I don't think you need to worry. I think it is about a sure thing they will die. Here in Michigan despite the efforts of the DNR the borers keep showing up in new place slowly covering the whole lowert penninsula. One nursery in Saginaw went ahead cut down $80,000 in nursery stock because he figured it would only be a matter of time.

Too bad.

I was a forestry student at Purdue, and work for a park system in Indiana. My dad also works for the DNR. The advise I hear and was taught. Plant new trees now for more than likely your trees will be killed. If you contact your local DNR they can supply you with information about the insect. Here is a link that should give you some info. One of the biggest causes of the insects spread is people hauling fire wood.

i cut a bunch down at my BIL's - I was surprised, every single tree was dead. 100% I don't know if there is a treatment for it.

Did the forester say plant new ash trees? Will they be safe? Or is there a certain kind the borer won't get? Thanks, Gus

New ash trees won't be safe, they will just fall victim to the borer also. I would talk to a local nursery in your area to determine what would be the best tree for you.
