Was going to send a few calves and 5 or 6 old cows to the sale tomorrow. Tried to get off work early today so that I could get them up. Things came up at the office, so could not get away till late. Dark when I got home. Fed the cows and got them in a lot but too dark to sort out. Decided to forget selling tomorrow. Heard a cow off in the distance bawling. Checked on her. She had a calf a couple days ago . I thought it was doing fine, but found it dead tonight. I guess it never nursed and got down to 16 deg last night. I hate that, knowing that I should have checked them better. At times I really wonder why I do this.

Hoping y'all had a better day.

We had an old vet tell us once, that no matter how many or how few head of livestock you have that you will always have problems. Sometimes though, it seems these problems are self inflicted but you just have to make the best of it.

Things happen whether you're there or not so don't beat up on yourself. If the calf didn't nurse more than likey you'd of lost it anyway.
I have cattle running in 100 acres of fields and
woods lots of time in the Summer the calves will be 2 or 3 days old before they cows bring them out of hiding so being here all the time doesn't help in that respect for me.

Hey Steve, I just sent some cows and calves to the auction, had 1 older cow that brought 10 dollars, she was old but still had all teeth, didn't won't to have to feed her through the winter. #00 lb calves brought $1.45 a pound and 1 black heifer brought (600lbs) 1 dollar a pound.
