I have a grasshopper ZTR mower that I mow about 8 acres with. The yard has hundreds of trees on it, and with the ZTR, I can get around each tree. The whole 8 acres takes about 8 hours, as opposed to the 18-20 it used to take with a 48" riding mower.

I have a hard time getting used to operating a zero turn. seems like everytime i go to turn it or try to keep it straight, i just mess up and steer all over the place. Apparently so do my friends. they told me once that they would always wind up gettting the lawn mower out to mow around the pond. One wrong move with the leveer and off into the pond you GO!!!!! !

SCAG in reply to djw, 12-08-2006 05:31:51
I purchase 19HP commercial SCAG with 48" deck about 3 years ago. Mow about four acres of "lawn" on steep rocky hillside, covered in young trees. We try to mow only three to five times a season. Set deck at 5 1/2 inches, never rake. Very thick blue grass on most of it. Some is old hay field (alfalfa, quack grass etc.).

WE love it! I trim with string trimmer only once per season. I noticed the junipers next the house never got done this year! Opps....

I should sell my push trim mower. Haven't used it since I got the zero turn mower.

I abuse my SCAG. Been know to use it to cut acres pasture weeds down after sheep have grazed. Don't recommend using it to cut corn stubbly but done that too....

Currently I am using it to build a new hay field organically (no spraying ). Cutting 2 acres of thistle and giant ragweed problem on new 2006 field of orchard grass and timothy. After one more year of cutting down the ragweed and thistle (hopefully as three hay crops in 2007), I will frost seed with white clover. Should make some excellent horse hay and possible winter grazing next to the barn. It works so much better than the rough cut mower behind the tractor. Doesn't just knock it down.

I'm not familiar with that model, but I can tell you we were amazed at how much time we cut getting a john deere zero turn.

We cut our mowing time to 4 hours versus 8+ on our old 60" lawn and garden tractor. Nothing like being able to mow (and mow well) at 12mph.

You should be excited.

I mow my friends lawn with his. Not bad. I would rather use my X-Mark. His yard is to big and rough for the New Holland. the NH18 is great for smooth yards and small ones under 1/2 acre. You can't go wrong buying a zero turn mower, no matter what brand.

We had a chain/cone drive Dixon zero turn that worked real well, just had to keep the chains and cones in adjustment.

We traded it in on a used Gravely zero turn hydrostat drive, it works real well and cuts real nicely as well.

We mow about an acre or so with it, we can cut that in about an hour with the zero turn compared to a couple hours with the previous standard lawn mower.
