Next month I have to haul a small bulldozer from Aurora, IL to the south side of Columbus, Ohio.

I"m thinking about south to Indy and east to Columbus but wonder about east to Ft Wayne and then south to Columbus. It"s 45 miles less through Ft Wayne but the time on Mapquest is an hour longer and that doesn"t sound right. I"m not familiar with this area. Any ideas?

I'am not going to disagree with the others, but I think they are talking car driving not loaded truck-semi driving because I don't think you are going tobe running 70-75 MPH.The 30 33 Route will let you run 55 60 Easily.Other than Decatur,In.you only have 3little 1 stop light-sign towns. But if you like Chicago driving then you will love Indie.Rand-McNally only shows 15 Min.Diff drive time.

Avoid Ft. Wayne if possible.

Go thru Indy, I have taken that Route 30/33 shortcut way a couple of times and its slow slow slow, thought I'd never get home that way!

Good idea. I live just north of Indy and will probably know of any construction, etc to avoid in the area when the time comes.

I have family in those areas and live in columbus....take 65 south to Indy and then 70 straight across....all highways....I've pulled a trailer on smaler highways and the stop and go kills you on speed and breaks, fuel, etc....
Unless you have a weight problem, then 30 to ft wayne and then 33 is nice to the top of columbus, then around 270 to the south side.

Indianapolis to Columbus will be all interstate. Ft. Wayne to Columbus, via 33 will be a lot of 2 lane with some stoplights. Some stop and go slow, small towns. Moderate truck traffic, and some farm equip. Like posted earlier, not bad but depends on how you like to travel.

None of those on-line map services will ever show you the best way. None of them seem to realize that there are roads other than interstate highways. Your best bet is to get the individual state road maps and pick out your own route. the on-line map services should be used as a quick reference only.
