last night i got home from a christmas program to find that my 19 year old son brought home a desoto from the junk yard after i advised against it 2 months ago. and he just lost his job a week ago. insurance on the 2 vehicles he has is due. the bad part is, with my collecting hobby i have 4 cars, 3 trucks and 20 or so tractors around the place. so i was not setting a great example although i do fix my stuff up and he hasn't done much with his. i usually have to help him and i wasn't really planning on dropping projects to do a car. especially when i just started on the house repairs i've been neglecting with the tractor restoring. what do you think?

Think you summed up the problem in your first sentence. "19 yr old boy." They do some of the darndest things. My second son has reached that age. Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway. Oldest boy kept driving his car with a bad radiator fan instead of parking it until he could save up to buy the part. He's been on foot now for two years because he blew the motor. Youngest is heading down the same road. His car had a leaking head gasket. Put some stopleak in it to get by until he saved up enough to buy another car. That's been two years ago. Not a dime in savings. Lots of gizmos and gadgets purchased during this time. Asked him if he could ride any of these things to work/school when his car does go belly up? Oh well, his bicycle is still hanging in the shop. Sometimes they have to learn lessons the hard way. Guess if you were so inclined, you could help him out on the insurance, etc. if he helped out on the home repairs. I imagine that jobs are pretty scarce around you unless you go into the big city. Kinda long walk from your place. Guess the best we can do as parents especially when they reach that age is try to make sure they don't do anything that might kill them. The rest sometimes they have to learn on their own. Later in life, they will realize that dad wasn't so dense aferall.

1951 DeSoto Deluxe black 4 dr. was my first car. Had the fluid drive trans. Looked strange had a clutch peddle. Just put on the brake to stop and hit the gas to go. Four wheel corner slid on gravel no problem. Not much on starting in cold weather. Hung out with a guy in school who had a 57 DeSoto with the fins and push buttom auto trans. The 51 is on the back of the home place just a shell.

What year did he show up with? A big amen as to wht the rest said about what he could have arrived home with! The part about drugs.

The "coulda been worse" comments that some have offered below are hollow statements. That's like saying that someone has syphillis, gonnerhea, herpes, genital warts and a couple of unidentified VD bugs but it "could be worse". Face it, the car is nothing but a money pit in the young guy's life, nothing more nothing less. Sure, it coulda been worse, but it coulda been better (ie. if he had not bought it). A money pit is a money pit and in my opinion, that's all that needs saying in the matter as far as was it a smart move or not.

Who urinated in your Cheerios? WHAT isn't a money pit?

Isn't a NEW car a money pit?...every month you hand over copious amounts of money to drive one.

You own a home? If you do, you know full and well, you never stop putting money into one.

Do you have any vices? Do you smoke or drink? Gamble..even play the Lottery? Does your farm actually make money?

Do you eat? That gut is a money pit, you don't feed it for nothing!

Any purchase or acquisition can be analyzed as being unjustified....but seems to me this kid is onto something worthwhile. Makes me wish my old man hadn't poo-pooed the Kaiser I wanted to save 35 years ago. I also know had he bought an air conditioner back then, we wouldn't have starved to death, nor would his hoard of money been threatened. But to a skin flint..it was a waste of MONEY. Of course his next wife changed all that, but his kids weren't worth the EXPENSE. I've never been without a nice car, an air conditioned house, food in the pantry nor..... money in the bank. I own the money..it doesn't own me.

What isn't a money pit? I thought you might have figured that out from my post but here goes again. One thing that isn't a money pit is the decision not to buy it .... that's a no brainer. And as far as your remark about my breakfast cereal, i have always been under the impression that this is a discussion forum and as long as I am not rude or do not swear etc. at anyone, my comments are welcome whether they agree with yours or not. And also keep in mind that my post was referring specifically to those who had already replied about the "it coulda been worse" philosophy. Perhaps my reference to the various diseases that I used in my discussion riled you up but of course that was used as an example only, it didn't rrefer to anyone involved in this DeSoto thing. So now you understand and know the rest of the story.

My son (17 years old) did work but hasn't in the past 3 months just brought home a 6 week old pig. No pen in the close vicinity and if its like the dog and cat he brought home. I will be stuck with it in about 3 days.

I can sure think of a lot worse things your son could have brought home. The Desoto is a car you don't see many of. If he gets it running, and he gets tired of it I am sure he can sell it again. Now if you would have said he brought home a chevy chevette I could see your concearn. With your collection you must have the room for another car. I would encourage him not to drive anything when his insurance runs out. Stan

you guys are great! yeah, the desoto is cooler to me than mom. i took off my excitement long enough to give him a stern talking to as requested by mom. he has actually been trying to find a job. his last one was part time through an agency, so we knew it wasn't going to last. it makes it tougher to deal with when my son was not really popular in school, no drugs or drinkmg, no girlfriends to speak of, and a really nice guy. he is somewhat mechanically inclined, but not overly ambitious. but sometimes it surprises me what he can do. i think i will sell some of my junk to make the wife happy and see what he can do.

Oh the other thing have a friend that has simalar situation about son not having job and car insurance is due, I had given her the advice of if he don't have a job then he don't need car insurance cause he has no where to go, need les to say mom and pop paid the sons insurance.

Well it might be a good idea for the son to find another job so he can fund these projects. I feel for ya cause I remember being that age and having the itch for an old car it was almost like an addiciton ya couldn't get it out of your head to ya got the vehicle. I understand your point of view too you have needs like finishing some of your projects to, plus having a bunch of vehicles sitting around sometimes the town can get on ya for having unregistered vehicles, i know in my neck of the woods the towns have been cracking down on vehicles unregistered lying around they usually end up going to the crusher sad cause people don't realize that once they are gone they are gone for good never to return. Back to the subject at hand. I don't like to sound forward but may be your son needs to pound pavement to find another job. The neat thing is you are blessed with doing father son projects that i think is worth the weight in gold I wish I could do that with my dad but it will never happen. The other thing you know your son isn't roaming the streets getting into trouble he will be home working on these vehicles and helping you too!? If you thin of thining down his herd of vehicles you can send them my way just kidding! Take a deep breath and have a father son chat see what happens.

While I agree it might be a bit of a pain to have the boy dragging home an old DeSoto, there are far worse things he could have come home with:

Drugs

Friends with drugs

Pregnant girlfired

Foriegn car

Riced-out foreign car (think Orange Honda Civic with no exahust, cut springs, and an engine that sounds like a weed wacker.)

Alcohol

Friends with alcohol

etc.
