I am looking for a 540 RPM PTO pump capable of producing 60-65 hydraulic HP. Something like 3000 psig and 40 gpm. Anybody know of such an animal??

Gerald J. brings up a very valid and interesting point that you are probably at the upper end of a 540 RPM PTO systems capability.

Does anyone know what the HP limitations on the 540 RPM PTO system is or was? What is the largest HP tractor you ever remember using a 540 RPM PTO on?

As Gerald states the largest PTO pumps that I have ever personally seen for 540 RPM is around 22 GPM. The 40 GPM range pumps that I have seen are for the 1000 RPM PTO’s.

A 40 GPM pump @ 3000PSIG would require approximately 85 HP to run.
A 30 GPM pump @ 3000 PSIG would put you in that 60 HP range.

However 3000PSI is a little higher working pressure than these PTO pumps are usually rated for.

Take a look at what the surplus center has to offer on page 18 of their catalog Northern tool would also be a good online source to look at.

Tom,

I checked out the Surplus and nothing there that will work. I am pretty much giving up on that thought for now. FYI, the JD 5520 is a 75 PTO HP tractor with only 540 RPM. The only difference to my 5420 is turbo and fuel calibration. The parts book calls out for different injectors, but the dealer's people tell me they are the same part. Me I am not sure. Anyway, I have a benchmark of 75 PTO HP as OK by JD. I do not know the details of other tractors/models.

Thanks for the help.

Mark

I ran an Oliver 1850 Diesel pulling a Gehl 600 chopper back in the late '60s...on 540 PTO and it used just about all of the engine's 93 HP at times...no problems, but you should maintain a straight line if possible....

"What is the largest HP tractor you ever remember using a 540 RPM PTO on?"

To clarify this question I mean a standard sized shaft and 540 only not the units with dual PTO's

I believe Case/IH pushed 105 hp or so through their 540 standard pto stub by using some rare-metals in making it & the gears on some models of their tractors. Real $$$ to replace.

Problem becomes the shaft from there then.....

Lot of the medium-big size direct drive grain augers needed about 80hp, was a little hard on pto stubs & shafts.

Sounds like a real spendy hyd unit!

That's about the limit of the 540 PTO shaft just before it twists off. So if you have a surge that takes more torque momentarily you probably will twist off the shaft.

I've not seen any over 22 gpm to mount directly on the PTO shaft. You may have to adapt a bigger gear pump with a coupling and a mounting shelf.
