I am considering buying a VW Passat, probably a 1999-2001, with the 1.8L turbocharged motor. Does anyone have any experience with these vehicles, are they reliable, are they a good car?

I've got a 97 Passat TDI ( turbo diesel ).

I really like it, the car gets right around 45 mpg every tank.

They do have their quirks that you have to deal with, but its worth it for me to save the money on fuel with the 90 miles I drive a day round trip.

A great website for tdi VW's is www.tdiclub.com.

Why purchase a gasser if driving long haul? The V6 diesel Passat can move out with the best of them. 180HP factory stock when tuned to Europe specs. More of course with a little work. The 1.9 four cylinder TDI diesel can be cranked up to 160HP stock. Electronic TDI engines up to and incluiding the 1.9 can have the computer controled injection pump replaced with an early mechanical unit. They make a great engine to swap into other vehicles or equipment.

Six cylinder

Only if its free. Then sell it before it breaks again. German cars are junk. They require a ton of expensive maintnence like timing belts. Ask your parts guy what he thinks. Run. I've talked to people in the parts store lot and every time it's the same thing. One big headach.

I've got an '04 with the same engine. Commute 40 miles each way every day, all interstate, run it pretty hard. It's comfortable, quite, and lots of power where I want it (Not the low end). Very stable, anti-lock, anti-slip, on-demand 4WD (4-motion), good safety ratings. It's what I need. No troubles at 30K miles. This is affectionatley known as the "sludge engine", same as in the Audi's. Do a search on sludge engine and learn. What it means to me is you change the oil on time with quality synthetic, document it, and no worries. WWW.passatworld.com is a great resource.

I can't speak from experience on the Passat but I have a Jetta TDI and it is good mechanically but it has a lot of electrical gremlins that are inexcusable in this day and age. The car drives great, has a lot of torque, is great in snow, and gets 45+mpg. The 1.8T is a sporty set up but I think it needs premium fuel (ouch!). I'd recomend a VW with a diesel but for a gasser go for a Toyota.

Stay away.

I know someone with a Jetta with the 1.8T. A 2002 model, or there-a-bouts.

VW's in general seem to be known for having lots of electrical gremlins. This particualr one has had its share. Most of the stuff is more annoying than serious though, like dash lights that intermittently fail.

Parts are expensive, and dealers are few and far between.

I bought my daughter a used 1999 VW Beetle.

I sure haven't been impressed with it.

I drive a 1997 Mercury Cougar with 215,000 miles and it still is a great, solid car.

The Beetle has about 60,000 miles and has given quite a bit of trouble.

Plus, the Cougar gets 27 and the Beetle gets only about 30...

All things considered - I don't think the VW holds a candle to the value of the Cougar...

A used car dealer that I do web work for had a Jetta, and a 2001 Passat Wagon on his lot, he could never hardly keep them together long enough to sell them, the Passat just got back from getting a Vacuum Pump put on it, (2 weeks to get the pump)and it sold this week. The Jetta has mysterious electrical problems all of the time, VW dealer has gave up on it.

A friend has an 2002 and he's had lots of troubles with it. The latest was the oil cooler. It's the 1.8T motor, and it has an oil cooler between the engine block and oil filter, which engine coolant circulates through. Well, I guess they fail sometimes, and it was his turn. Engine oil in the coolant. Very expensive few days at the stealership.

My BIL and his wife had his and hers. I really like them (the cars, not the BIL). They bought them new (both with gas engines), kept them 3 years (about 120,000 mi), and traded them in on a Navigator and a Lexus. They never seemed overly please with the cars, mechanically I never heard them speak of any problems, just not what they really wanted. I had planned to buy one with the turbodiesel, the size seems to fit me. With what diesel prices have done though, I'm keeping my 95 Intepid.

LOL, knock on wood its been a gem. I bought it as an Avis car with 28K on it for the spouse. She ran it to 95K with a battery, water pump, and transcooler line. I'm at 255,000 now. So far a crank position sensor and some tires has been it. Best piece of machinery I've ever owned.
