Going to build my own ROPS

After a little pricing I decided to build my ROPS.

But I need a couple of close up pictures and some measurements.

Anybody have a ROPS out there on a large frame IH that can help me?

Please, don't even try it. I respect you have the best of intentions..... ..... .....but. No matter how smart, experienced and practical you are. Odds are less than 1% you can build an effective rops system.

I seen some of the old JD stopler cabs that were on 4020s and up to the 5020s that had the two post roll bar in them go for 25 to 150 bucks,all you do is strip the tin work off,,I know its goes against all teachings to put green on red,,but maybe its an option,,,billy

"Forgive" me for saying so, But I have a pair of those rails and I have thought of using them to make ROPS for my A-C WD. They are the heaviest squared tubing I"ve ever seen!

Hi Gary....don't know what they're pricing you at, but I can get you a brand new aftermarket one with canopy and painted....looks just like the original...for $1150.00. Seems like you'd have that much in time and material if you build one from scratch. Just my two cents worth.

Yes Scot it would take 3 or 4 days to build but my time ain't worth nuthin in the winter.

One thing to consider is the liability issue. If you are the only one operating the tractor then you should be OK. But if you have family,friends,hired help etc operating it then you are opening yourself up to one heck of a lawsuit if they roll over,and get hurt in any fashion.Even a few bruises is worth a couple hundred grand nowadays.

I've thought of that but if they sue me with a home made ROPS then what would happen with no ROPS what so ever.

When we built the ones at the shop we went one gauge heavier on the steel than what the Factory ones were to help protect against that.

Ain't the sue happy society we live in great?

Gary--The factory rops are built so they will give and absorb some of the shock of rolling over. Building one heavier is not such a good idea as it will not bend as much and might break an axle housing and seperate from the tractor, thus the operator would be more apt to have greater injuries. Just my opinion.

I was at a estate farm auction where they were selling a 706 with a non-factory ROPS.

The auctioneer announced that the tractor purchaser would have to sign a "hold harmless clause", releasing the estate from any unforseen future damage claims if any. I've heard the same mentioned when a PTO shield has been removed.

I used to rewire antique light fixtures that I would resell in the shop. Now, I just cut the old wires, and inform the buyer that they need to have it done by a professional. Less to worry about down the road.

I have an IH ROPS and canopy on my 1650 Oliver, I live at Slater IA. would be happy to give you measurements or come over to visit and take them yourself.

There is an outfit that had the two post ROPS & Canopy advertised at 840.00. From the picture I saw it looked pretty original. I have a # somewhere....

I might consider $840 but the $1500 dollars is way to high for $200 worth of steel.

We've built them before so why not again is what I decided.

Know what ya mean. I've been trying to hunt one down for the old Oliver. Thought about getting one of these for it (they are advertised to fit "vintage International"). They look fairly close to original to my untrained eye.

BTT Corp. out of Kilmichael MS. The # is 662-262-4303. Saw the ad & kept it out of a paper from this spring.

Just went to their web site and didn't see any ROPS.

They had a JD with a ROPS for sell but no rops listed.

Let me know if you find out more.

Allen just be sure that elasped time from arc to dark is accurate and quick.The 49$ helmet I demoed was quite a bit longer than my Jacobsen helmet long enough I saw stars

Yup I like them.

When we built those ROPS at the shop we had one for a pattern.

So I'm gonna need the length of the posts,the width at the bottom and the width at the top.

They are built on a taper.

The pictures are to see how they patterned the mounting brackets and how they fastened the canopy to it.

We matched it pretty close and without them laying side by side you couldn't tell the difference between the ones we made and the factory ones.
