I had a friend come over the other day and cut some hedge posts. I drove him out back to where "the tree" was. He was amazed that there were 55 posts harvested from ONE tree! There were several good corners and a bunch of decent line posts. The tree had several arms going out in all directions and was at least 60' tall. I know of a couple others that are similar in stature, but slightly smaller - 35-40 posts (probably) from each.

Hedge is really good, but we have some cedar posts that were set in 1850. Show a lot of weathering and are nearing the end, but still hold a fence.

They make great posts that for sure.

My dad put in a fence on Grandpas farm in 52 when he returned from Korea.

The line post are about 4" hedge post and they are still good 55 years later.

Know if I could find straight ones that I could drive with the Pounder I could make the Perfect Fence.

Yup! They can last just about forever! I can see some from my front door that were put in the ground in the 1960's. There are older ones than that on "the back forty". There are some on the old place that were put in by my Great Grandpa - and he died in 1937.

I was born in 1937 and our farm in ILL. was two 1/4 sections side by side with a long row of "Osage Orange" or some called them "Hedge Apple Trees dividing the Farm.A lot of Fence Posts were cut out of that row of Hedge. My folks used to throw the Hedge apples around the Farm to get rid of Mice and Rats. Must not have worked as one of the shovelers on the Corn Shelling Crew one time got to Screaming and jumping around holding something in his hand that was inside his Pants until he got his Pants down and out jumped a big Rat which had run up his Pants leg.His Wool Long Johns saved him from getting bit we figured or maybe he had its head held so tight in his hand until it got free.Any way they all cut Inner Tube Bands to put around the Cuffs of their pants for the rest of the Job.
