Whoooeee!

Just came in from being outside and tinkering with an old tractor.

Was wondering why the darned wrenches were sticking to my hands. Say now, it's a little "snappy" out there.

Good news is that it isn't snowing. :>)

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. Winter halfway over? Look at the calendar. I think that winter started less than a week ago. The ground just started freezing yesterday for the second time around. 2 weeks ago we had 5 to 6 inches of frost. My son was putting in post holes for a deck he was building as part of his job. The pickaxe was a handy tool, but everyone I know avoids it like the plague. A little warmer weather and about an inch of rain and it got real muddy. It was actually better with a little frost today as I was moving some dirt trying to close up an electrial trench that we started digging 2 or 3 weeks before Thanksgiving. Don't let me get anyone down, I appreciate not tracking snow into the house everytime I come in. Yes the days are starting to get a little longer and that is welcome. I cleaned out the attached garage so that 2 cars will fit in it. Now I won't have to move the projects out of the shop to keep away from morning frost. I should try to get the cab and blower mounted on the garden tractor to help keep the snow away. I got the welder moved out to the heated shop since I finally got enough amps to run it. By the time I get ready for winter, I hope it is over.

Allan,
When I had the Excavating business going, in the cold, my mechanic would buy a cheap plastic tarp from menards and take our oil fired torpedo heater to the machinery. He either hauled a 5500 watt generator with him or ran it off his welder.

Throw the tarp clear over the machine and slip a couple 16' 2" X 4"'s under for space to work. Works great and will heat the metel up in :30 minutes.

Allan, I got a big shop building with a heated floor in it. Since Momlady's cancer started acting up again, I have'nt done a thing in there for the last 3 months. You're welcome to it, just have to move some old Olivers out of the way.....and drive a tad longer to get at 'er each morning! Larry Coltrin

We're blessed the same here in N Iowa. Teens in the morn and 30's in PM and no snow. You Nebraskan's musta missed that last blast too, huh? But you're right, it is bearable and happy to see old man winter on the run.
Oh - my shop IS heated so I am spoiled when I work. Gotta go work on my restore plow!
Merry Christmas!

Hey!

I have to "re-iron" an old plow too. What does it cost per bottom to do that little job?

That's one task I'm not looking forward to it at all. :>(

Don't know the cost - this is the first one I am trying and it is just a 3 point 12" for behind my JD 400 garden tractor. BUT - - - I have an old trip 2 bottom slat that I plan to redo later this winter and I have a friend that is on his 4th plow restore so I'll ask him the cost.

Merry Christmas to all. 32F this morning and a bit of old snow on the ground. At that time of the year usaly we would have a couple of feet of snow and dream of a 32 degre day with abrigth sun like this morning. Told my friend aview time that winter would be slow to come but seem suprise. My two saddle horse witch pass the winter outside have about half of there winter coat. Should be a not to bad winter her in nortern New-Brunswick, Canada.

Hi Guy,

When I took the floorboard off, I found lots and lots of broken glass. Looks like somebody had an accident somewhere along the line. :>)

Can't tell ya how much enjoyment I'm having working on these old tractors. Yeah, I know. I need to "get a life". :>)

Hi Allan,
You say you need to 'get a life'.

In my long long life I've met thousands of people living their lives in unhappy quiet despiration.

I suggest that most folks, many of whom are on this forum, envy your 'life' and would trade with you in a heartbeat.

Not only do you appear to have a 'life' which you so obviously totally enjoy but also you lend inspiration to many others. These are noble accomplishments exceeding what most men accomplish. You have my admiration, and I'm sure that of many others, for that which you do. Please don't stop.

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year Allan.

Merry Christmas Allan. My thermometer reads 20, bright sunshine, no snow. Stepson is coming out later today, and we are going to attempt to put some better tires on his S-10. No heat in the shop, but with the sun shining, it will be OK.

You bet!

The way I look at it, the days are getting longer and we've got this old winter on the downhill run.

Second half always seems longer tho for some reason. :>(
