We used to use 8 volt batteries in M farmalls to get them to crank over better before everyone converted them to 12 volts. My question is this. Can you still buy 8 volt batteries and could a person put 2 of them in a 4430 to boost starting power. You would have 2 --8 volts in series instead of 2 ---6 volts.

I buy my 8 volt batteries at Napa to answer that question. Certanly would not recommend a 16 volt system.

Better yet, why don't you put in two twelve volt batteries in a parallel system instead of using 6 or 8 volts in a series? Put in two 12s and run a ground wire from each to the starter mounting bolt. Then run a positive from each battery to the solenoid post on the starter. Nothing else will have to be changed and you will have better cranking power. Just don't use low CCA batteries.

You could install 2-8V batteries in series, the problem would be modifying the alternators regulator to put out the 19-20V necessary to charge a 16 V battery. Also lights and other 12V electronics would have a short life at near 20V.
Your better off staying 12V with big heavy cables, big battery and good starter.

The original 6 volt system will crank as good as a 12volt if it"s been properly maintained.

Do you have the right size of cable between the battery and starter? Over the years the cables inadvertently get swapped to smaller than adequate gauge which limits amperage flow to the starter. Every 6 volt tractor I"ve ever bought has suffered from this.

Are the starter brushes in good shape? If they are worn or the starter is worn out in general it takes more of the battery to get things spinning.

Another thing to keep in mind with an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system is the ability or potential lack of the current charging system maintaining the voltage.

If you"d rather not repair your current 6 volt system I would recommend you go to a 12 volt. There is plenty of information out there on making the conversion. The GM alternators work best (may need to fabricate a mounting bracket), change the bulbs in the lamps, add a resistor to the coil wire (or change out the coil)and your all set. 6 volt starter could care less, just don"t crank it for excessive amount of time.
