So,

The vet calls and says come get 'em. Surprisingly they lived, are cleared up and ready to go home.

Vet costs=$235, special weanling feed=$63, 5 panels to build a temporary quarantine pen=$350, scale weight stop=$5 and diesel fuel to run fetch ‘em, probably another $20.

Now, my pencil says that puts those two "free, Christmas present" ponies right at $336 a pop.

And, so goes with the horse business. :>(

My wife was given 2 goats by a neighbor, a minister. It cost me $600 to amke the fences goat worthy. I have kidded my neighbor " what did I do to deserve this??? He laughs his butt off. Good neighbor.

Both just hobbies for you folks,she likes the horses,you like old red tractors,unless you actually sell them and get paid for your time its just hobby either way in my eyes.I imagine the misses doesn't like the old red tractors anymore than you do the horses,is the way it usually is from the customers i have. Each his own,and thats fine

My daughters both had horses. Seams every time I turned around, a vet was in the yard for something. One of the horses got his jaw caught in the gate chain, and broke it, just hanging. Horse should have been shot. We had the vet wire it back together. Now that was expensive. The way I look back at the horse thing, when my daughters were growing with the horses I always knew where they were. Troubles started when my one daughter got a mustang (with a motor) Never knew where she was. Both daughters did make it through the teenage years. Allan I would say you got a good deal. Stan

I've got to get a picture for you to show your wife of the farm next to my dads. 40 acres of scrub brush. Lady bought it, so far 440K for the farm, 500K for the barn, 6 bucks a foot for perimeter fence and the same for interior fence spliting into 2 acre paddocks. The kicker is 6 months of work with a 2 D6's, 2 track hoes, 1 scraper pan, a backhoe, and a D4. 10 men on the job with the equip every day. All that for 40 horses.

If it makes you feel better, here, in East Central, IA the cost perday/horse would have been $10/day/head just for the hospital board. Plus the Antibiotics would have easily ended up over $1000. YOU GOT OFF CHEAP!!!! :> Glad to hear they are doing well.

You dont even want to know what they charge here.... $10 a day is what they get to board at a farm or stable. Vet clinics need to change the first number for run of the mill, add a 0 (or two) and change the first number for the better equine hospitals.

Yes My employer has experienced the costs in Kentucky. Had a mare at Rood & Riddle a few years back for an eye problem. She was a 3 Chimneys at the time getting bred. Well, lets say the vet bill turned out to be about 1/2 of what the stud fee cost. And that wasn't cheap.

Yeah,

I've been cussin' horses all my life. Still hate to see 'em chopped up for dog food tho.

So, guess I'll feed the lil' darlings just to see if they'll ever grow up. :>)

The thing about horses too, they dont wait for nothing. The dont wait for new shoes when you got other bills, Wait until you got some cash before you fix it like you can with a tractor.
