Got some hoses made at Napa today, 3 hoses $80.00 bucks. Short hoses, less than 3', Tractor Supply company has what looks like a different grade, about 10 bucks or less. Any thoughts on this, I have two more hoses to buy.

NCCub There's a company called Horthern tool & equipment that has a good selection of ready
made hoses. This company used to be called
northern Hydaulics inc. They have good prices
on components and fittings too. I just installed
a two spool loader valve on an IH 666 and the cost of the valve was 180.00 and made in the U.S.A.

Price and quality seems to be very good Jim WJ

You left a lot of details out.... but around here that would be fairly normal for a good quality 8-8 2 wire hose. I've had 4 wire hoses no more that 4 feet long with flat face fittings run that much alone. I've had the 20 buck Dayco hoses too. They don't last. Period. It's worth it to buy Parker or Gates. GoodYear isn't around these parts so much, so can't really comment... If these are small hoses with simple fittings, then you may have paid a bit much for a good quailty, but I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it.

I've used alot of hoses from TSC and only had a problem with one which must of had a defective fitting. I had four of the TSC hoses on our old loader which ran almost every day for five years with no problems.

The hoses were part number H42508 (3'), H42506 (2') fittings were 08U-108 (qty 2), 06U-108 (qty 1), 06U-106 ((qty 1), 08U-106 (qty 2). These hoses were rated at 3500 psi (1/2 inch) and 4000 for the 3/8. The thing that is unusual is a $21.00 charge for ? (labor?). It is listed at a qty of 6, part number LAB, line xxx, desrciption press, net 3.5 everything totaled $88.06 ($29.00 each)
I skipped TSC and went to local mom and pops shop got (2) more 3/8 hoses rated at 4800 psi (pix-x'el brand) for approx. 14.00 each both 2' long.

kerry, at my store we use gates hose and fittings..i think the ones you got were made with weatherhead material. i will try to figure out what we would sell similar hoses for..by the way, we do not charge labor for making hydraulic hoses at our store either..napaguy

hey kerry, i checked numbers and prices today..first let me say that most napa stores are privately owned and therefore some times there is a difference in prices.i put in your weatherhead numbers and came up with 58.87 in parts. the gates items came up to 63.00..that is walk in price. however, if i had made those 3 hoses for a farm customer i would have given him dealer price which is 48.17..like i said earlier, we do not charge labor for crimping hoses. that would be like charging labor to mix paint. i feel we make enough by selling the hose and fittings..however years ago we did charge 4.50 per crimp on air conditioning crimps but it was a hand crimp type machine and we were required to cut the old shell off of the customers hose..napaguy

Thanks for looking. I actually needed 2 of one of the hoses napa made and went by the mom and pops shop again, made the hose with higher rated hose for 15.00 bucks. So I will call the napa and ask about the labor charge but other than that, just lesson learned.

If your machine isn't down and you don't need hoses immediately, try Baum Hydraulics. I have had good luck with them and the quality of their products is always excellent. They usually turn orders around in the same day, so you rarely wait more that 2-3 days for what you need.

Yeah,

That burns me a little too.

I can buy a cylinder bearing for a 30 year old combine for $28 and common everyday stuff like a hose will danged near break the bank.

There is a big difference in hoses tho; that cheap stuff *should last the summer. :>)

I think you got hosed on on 9 feet of hose and 6 fittings for $80. I have bought them from a hose maker guy for about half. The tsc stuff is probably 2 or 3 wire, and ok for what it is, but they come in standard lengths, and are usually 1/2 inch diameter. You might need a larger diameter, especially for a return hose. And the tsc hose is likely going to be a little longer or shorter than what is ideal. And you might end up having to buy some more fittings, where the hose guy can put swivel fittings or 90 or whatever. The tsc hose will need some more fittings, and that means more joints, and more possibility of leaks. My2c

If those hoses just had regular, non-swivel, straight male pipe thread on there, I think you may have gotten hosed. I ussually go to a company that sepcializes in making hoses of all sorts, not just hydraulic but hydrant hoses, water, spray rigs, etc, and they sell all sorts of rubber products (belts, o-rings, etc.) just short of selling tires. They stock Goodyear, Parker(pioneer is a branch of Parker), Banjo, and a few other brands I can't think of.

A short 3' hose w/ regular fitting $1.50-2.50/fitting and about $2/foot at the most for the hose. Belts are a hechuva lot cheaper too. Saved myself about $100 from not goiing with Agco belts for our NI haybine this summer.

Cheaper than the hardware stores too, and they're located just across town.

Seems a little steep to me but then you didn't say hose size or fitting type. Some fittings can run the price up pretty good.

I have used hoses from almost all places that sell them and I have also never had any problems with any of them no matter where I got them. Just make sure they are rated for the preassure your system runs at or better

Be careful with hydraulic hose ratings..1 wire is good for low pressure hydraulics..usually around 2000 lbs or less...2 wire hose is good for 2000 to 4500 psi depending on size and rating [usually displayed on the hose]..Then there's 4 wire hose for much higher psi ratings...A competant hose maker is also helpful..I've seen many hoses " shuck " the crimped fittings because of poor assembly...Dangerous and messy..

The hose is as good as the manufacture. , the crimp as good as the man w/the machine. I would say go anywhere that stocks good hydraulic hose, gates good year etc. Any good name brand hose and a guy that nows waht hes doing will serve you well.
