just having few around, less than 6-7. With butchering 1-3 good eaters/ year. Pasture would be small between 3 and 8 acres. Would like to fence off the corn feilds for fall/winter eating of stalks and adding some cow poop. I have been around dairy cattle most my life, but most freinds I talk to arfe pretty biased. Also would cob corn have too much fiber for beef cattle. I am shopping now, but have no problem waiting till spring/summer to buy, as I have to plant my crops this spring for grain, bedding, and hay for the cattle i will have. Will I be able to sustain enough crops for a few on 23-30 acres of tillable ground. Just looking for some advice as this next year will be a learning exp.

I alwys like Herfords for their disposition and their all around performance, but now then a beefalo cross will get you more $$$ in the end an will take even less care, and can do better on less. With AI you can cross any breed, but still consider the Herfords, as they do very well.

You might want to investigate one of the rarer breeds because there are sometimes people willing to pay more for them and they will eat just as good as any. Also for home butchering a smaller breed will probably work the best. if you're used to butchering deer or something like that a 1200 lb steer can be a little overwhelming

Boy there's a question that will start an argument! What's the best breed of cattle for beef? Remember there is more variance within a breed then there is between breeds. So raise the breed of cattle you like and breed the type of cattle that work for your environment and your management system.
That's the best answer I can give you.

If you don't have a favorite breed, cross breeding Hereford and Angus (red or black) will give you a baldy calf that has hybrid vigor and finishes well. Packers like 'em, too. Selecting moderate size cattle with good disposition will keep maintenance energy requiremnts lower and will make feeding more economical. Avoid overly large frame size cows unless you have plenty of cheap feed!

I raise Purebred Black Limousin 10 to 14 on 37.5 acres. I cut my own hay enough for the long winters we have. But supliment with alfalfa and about 6 to 7 800 lb round bales for late summer use. They are very low fat and cholesterol animals very good for my bad heart. and very docile my 3000 lb bull is nothing but a big Teddy Bear. My friend has what is called Limi-Flex its Limousin and Angus mix about 50/50 to 75/25 L to A.
They are becoming a very popular animal as people are looking for the leaner meats that still have flavor nd are very tender.

We have had Herefords for a long time and had good luck. My brother's Angus bull came calling about 5 months ago. This is the first Angus I have ever been around and I can tell you that he is NUTS! I will sell off his calves as I don't want his traits in the herd. He was hand raised on a niple bucket, & I've tried to make friends, but if I go out in the pasture, I keep a close eye on him!

buy small to medium framed Herefords and Angus, they will have the best feed conversion, fastest turn over on finishing and will produce the highest quality meat. 23 acres is pleanty to raise the size herd you are talking. You can feed ear corn, not ground for the momma cows but without grinding your feed intake most likley will be too low for finishing properly.

Of the common beef breeds herfords are both docile and good eaters. I would go with polled (geneticly hornless) herfords. I have known people who milked one of their herford cows for their family use. I would never try that with and angus.
