It shifts in all gears good and runs in all gears.
When I put the tractor in 5th Gear and let off the clutch and press the break it kills the engine and stops! Which is good.

When the engine is off it is VERY hard to steer but it DOES STEAR. But like I said it is VERY HARD to stear!!

When the enine runs there is very little blow by.

There is a slight drip of oil under the oil pan it seems to be comeing from the drain plug.

Now for the Dyno...well It did not smoke very much, the blow by tube had a drible of smoke comeing out. The Dyno was WAY!! WAY!!! off on its calibration!! It read 125 HP wich is WRONG but they said it was do to other very Larg tractors running it and pulling the calibration off.

Now for the PROBLEM!!!!!
We notice, well I notice that there was a dribble of Anti Freese coming from the head and block near cylinder number 6! It was slight not squirting out but htere was a deffinet leak. we were not shure what to think, We were estimating nearly $700.00 to $1,000.00 to fix this problem.

As a whole I was very very impressed with the tractor until we got to the Dyno. I was very dissapointed that the dyno was not calibrated like it should have been. I was also hurt about the head gasket leak as well.

What do you all think..

That antifreeze leak from the head gasket under full load is very typical of an older Deere. Can't tell you how many times I've seen that. Fortunatly, they are not hard to fix. Just needs a new head gasket. I do however think you are a bit low on your estimate of $1,000. You'll have that in parts and machine work alone if you do the job right. By this I mean have the head surfaced and inspected for cracks, valves and seats ground, replace the injectors (have never attempted to rebuild a pencil nozzle as an old mechanic who I respect says he's never had luck doing that), head gasket set, misc. parts (thermostats, hoses, mabey a water pump kit while you're at it), and new head bolts (not nessacary for an older 404 but a darn good idea). At least you'll get to inspect the pistons and sleeves while you're in there, and you'll know what you've got when you're done. Try to get the seller to knock $500 or so off of his price.

Wow do you think this little leak is really a problem? Could I just over look it and let it go and use as is? The mechanic say he would do something about it being that this littel leak could go back the other way into the cylinder.

I have tried and tried, all I was able to do is get him to come off 500.00 in the first place... he did thats how we got to 8000.00 and this was before I went down there to look at the machine.

Sitting in the seat, which side is the antifreeze leak on? Which tractor is this ? The 68 or the 71 model?I am guessing it is the 68 and the leak is on the right side??

Replace the headgasket and have the valves ground while the head is off. Also be sure to have the head rough surface ground.

Even with the calibration off that dyno showed you what counts. Low smoke, little blow by,and it opened up that antifreeze leak which you may of never seen without it.

Now ,is this the one with a low houred overhaul ? if so have them retorque the cyl. head and see if they get any on it and retry it on the dyno.

Well it is not the low houred over haul. The hour meter is stuck pefectly on 9000 hours and does not move from there. I just dont know what to think. I loved the machine except for that, and the fact they did not get their Dyno Machine ready to make this critical measurement.....

Was the 125 Horse power showing on the gaugfe? How was the weather? Cold weather with moisture will make them SHOW higher horsepower.

We were near the Florida boarder. I'd say it was around 50ish degrees.
It was good wheather. We all knew the dyno was wrong, if it was pushin 125 it would have put up black smoke...the smoke was clear for the most part, with a little hint of black smoke.

There is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the fron wheels, just oil.

So, what you are seeing with the engine shut down is NORMAL.

Bob,

Does that tractor have the weep hole? 'Spose this is where the anti-freeze is leaking?

Maybe we should go up to ND after all? :>)

What's this WE stuff, I'm already here!

I'm TOO far north, though, about 200 miles NW of the other 4020 he is interested in!

Early 4020's had the weepholes, but I'm thinking the late ones didn't. (I'm sure the "correct police" will help me out here!) and I don't even recall if the tractor Raleigh was looking at was early or late!

From his description, I took it to mean a leaking head gasket, as the "weepholes", if present, are 1/2 ways down the block, halfways between the head gasket and the oil pan gasket.

I wish it wasn't quite so far away, and we didn't have quite as much family stuff going on, I'd like to go take a look at it for him.

I gotta go crank the boiler up a bit... the forcast low for tonight is 31 below!!!

Well the tractor I looked at down here in South Georgia was a 1971 4020 ther were no weep holes. I know the weep holes were on the earlier tractors but they were not on this one.
The anti freeze leak is between the head and the block, near the last cylinder (cylinder in back). It wasn't like it was gushing out, just more like it was wet.

As for the tractor in North Dakota...
Yeah I wish you could but that is 200 miles is too far. I my self would like to see this other tractor in ND for 5800.0 it is a 1969 tractor with an 830 hour over haul.

It was antifreeze! it was near cylinder number 6 (closest to the tractor).
As far as going to ND thoes were my thoughts exactly. But the custormer services was so good here. I just hope the guys are as helpfull as they were down here. Mechanicaly the rest of the tractor seemed very sound.

I just hope if I were to make a long trip like this that something does not go wrong like the dyno not working or something eles crazy like that. Or poor customer serivce where the guy would not coperate with me.

But yeah it makes me think I really do need to head up north in the cold to see what they have!!!

Raleigh what sort of work will this machine be doing and do you have any implements to attach to it. Like you I pondered over various machines. I have found one or two implements (slasher and trailed offset harrows)cost more than I spent on the tractor. Being a 30 year old machine I then spent half what I originally paid for it to get it up and running properly. To justify all this expense they need to be worked often and to work them you need gear to attach to them. The costs do add up. If you buy the right gear you can always count on getting a fair percentage of your costs back if and when you resell.

Cheers
