My father bought a Massey Ferguson new in 1968. I am trying to identify the model number and then track down a photograph. I don't know any specs but can say that it had the narrow front small 2 tire setup.

Can anyone possibly supply a list of models being sold as new in 1968 or give any other hints on trying to track down this model and photo?

TIA for any help.

My sister says she is pretty confident that it was a model 180. I gave her no clues as to my thinking and she came up with that answer on her own. I am still going to try to look for pictures I might have. I also plan to look around the web some more for pictures of the 180 to compare.

Thanks a lot to all of you who have responded! This seems like a helpful bunch of folks here!!

If you think it was 80 Hp, then it would be the 1080. Do you remember wich side the exhaust was coming out from? The 180 has the exhaust pipe coming up on the right and the 1080 on the left side as you would normally be sitting on the tractor.

No, I can't quite recall which side the exhaust was on.

This is bugging me more than I thought it would!! :-) I am going to try to "go mining" for old photographs this weekend since I think I should have a picture somewhere. And they are buried so deeply that I definately mean "mining"!!

Thanks to all for the replies. If/after I get this figured out I will advise.

The entire line up from the 150 up was available with narrow front ends. U.S. market tractors in 1968 were 135/150/165/175/180/1080/1100/1130.

To help narrow it down a bit, was this tractor a utility style or flat deck? (Did you sit straddle of the transmission or on a level "floor"?) Flat-deck models were 180 and up.

Any Multipower tractor would have had the 6-speed. (2X3) So the tranny description sound correct. That would have been common throughout the entire line. But were the shifters on the top of the tranny or on the dash? (On the tranny would indicate utility model)

Can you recall how big of a plow he used with the tractor? That might help narrow things down a bit.

I'm leaning more and more towards the 180 I think. It had the flat deck you mention and the shifters were on the dash. Dad pulled 3 bottoms with it.

Did the model number reflect the HP rating? I seem to recall that it was an 80 HP tractor so if model number reflects HP then that is another reason to think 180.

I dug out my dad's old day book / diary and found the day he bought the tractor, Thu Ap 11, 1968, and the day it was delivered, Sat Ap 13, but he does not mention the model number in the entry.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. I have looked through the photos here but have not found an exact match although I am leaning towards the 180 based on the look of the fenders. Interestingly, I don't think I have yet seen a single narrow front so I wonder if that was an option my dad went with for some reason.

I will continue digging but will appreciate any further thoughts. Additional information that might help includes, diesel - Perkins engine, I recall a MultiPower feature that was selected just by flipping a lever. Also seem to recall one shifter for low or high power and I think a 3 speed main shifter.

If I can't run across any photos on the web I may have to dig through years of photos on the hope I may have a shot that might include that tractor.

My parents sold our farm in 1995 and I now wish I had taken many more photos than I ever did! :-(

Thanks again for the thoughts so far.

I will begin a list that I hope others will add to or edit as they see fit.

My book is very vague on exactly what models were badged as 1968's so here go some guesses...

MF135
MF150
MF165
MF175
MF180

MF130
MF148?
MF168

1085
1080
1100
1130
1150

Not sure what tractors came in narrow front, HTH

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

Paul,
Go to the left side of this page and find "Tractor Photos" and click on it. Go part way down that page to the search box and type in 1968 Massey. I got back 13 hits, maybe you will see something there that looks familiar.
