Up to yesterday - we've had the mildest winter I've ever experienced in my lifetime - here in central New York. Keeps up it's going to destroy the maple syrup season. Usually snowmobiles all over by now instead of green grass. One day, it want from 50 degrees F to 11 below zero. I've got a little three-old that I take hiking almost every day. Up to now - it's been "rain and mud" hiking. This morning he wanted to go out - and we did - and it ended up a very short hike. He turned around and headed back to the house.

I got my Air Force Basic Training at Sampson AFB south of Geneva along Lake Seneca 54 years ago. My outfit was all guys from Michigan and should have been used to damp northern winters, but the weather in March, April, and the first half of May at Sampson was too much for a lot of them. Most of the city raised boys got pneumonia and spent time at the hospital. I was lucky I guess, I was raised on the farm here in southern Michigan and didn't get sick at all. I had a worse time taking the windy dry heat at Amarillo, Texas that summer. Beautiful country there where you are....I don't remember it being like that around Sampson...seems like there were a lot of farms, dairies, and orchards....a lot like it was here...then. Your little guy will get used to the weather and want to get out more I bet, especially if you get some snow.

Sorry, had you confused with someone else. Looks like you might be off RT. 205. Spent most of my 20's in Cooperstown and owned a place in Oneonta.

I got sent to Deere school every winter when things slowed down in the shop. Even got sent to Iowa twice. First Deere dealer I worked for on the NJ/NY line was in Ramsey - for Imperial Tractor Co. The boss owned the Deere dealership and also owned a BMW car dealership next-door. Believe it or not, our two service vehicles were BMWs that we beat the heck out of. I got sent to school in southern New Jersey - late 1960s. When I later worked for a dealer a little further north in Orange County, NY and I went to Deere service schools at G&H or Nelson Equipment (I forget which one) - a Deere dealership in the area. When I moved north to Otsego County in the late 70s and went to work for Laneway Inc. (ag, forestry, industrial, and consumer) in Oneonta - all our service schools were at the Deere place in Syracuse. Late 80s they wanted to send me to Dubuque for three weeks and I refused to go and almost got fired. Had four kids at home and all was heated with wood. Also had many animals to feed. I didn't want my wife burning the house down and didn't care to be away anyway. So, the vice-president fired me - but the president/owner stepped in and "vetoed" the deal - and I kept my job. The president, Jim Lane was a lifetime chicken-farmer - a real old fashioned farmer and business man and Deere tractor lover. He died around 1990 - sort of the "last of the tractor mohicans." When I first went to work at Laneway in the 70s - nearby there was a Case dealer, an Allis Chalmers dealer, a Ford dealer and an International dealer. We had a few "tractor dealers" get-togethers every year - it was something to remember. All these guys were old-fashioned farmers turned businessmen - getting their starts back in the day when a farmer sold tractors right from his farm as a sideline. All those dealers are gone now - except for the Ford place and they sell mostly small "play farm" stuff now.

Thats the best part of our weather in upstate NY, if you dont like it you dont have to wait long for it to change. Now maybe the ground will freeze enough so I can cut a little more wood . Its been way too muddy lately . Thanks for sharing the pictures,I enjoyed them .

Right up the road from me about 25 miles. Lots of Amish farmers moving to that area now. Better farming there then here. Amazing the difference a few miles can make. Here, we've got high-acid soil and spreading lime every other year costs a lot of money. Richfield Springs though, has neutral soil and no lime needed.

Otsego County - east and a little south of Syracuse. I live 15 miles from Cooperstown which I guess many know for the Baseball Hall of Fame. I've never been to it, but I do like the Farmers Museum there. When I worked at Deere I had to go to Deere school in Syracuse every winter. As I recall, that's where most of our Deere parts shipped from too.

Not much, but you do find top-soil in the strangest places. My southern sidehills are pretty good dirt. Must be where the glaicers decided to drop the good stuff. But plowing them is difficult - since every year the dirt wants to roll away downhill and not come back. And plowing it back up takes a lot more fuel and horsepower. Most of my fields though have about 4" of soil at best. Funny thing though - when I went to Florida for the first time. I got a flat tire on my camper-trailer and started looking around for a big rock to sit the axle on. First time in my life - I coldn't find a rock!

Know what you mean. I've seen a few cherry trees blooming here in NC. We have a little chill in the air now. Think that those little hikes with the three year old will produce great memories for the both of you. I think I will steal your idea & start that afternoon tradition with my two year old.
Matthew
