An old friend of mine who has been a mechanic for over 40 years has started wearing latex gloves for as much of the mechanical work he does as is possible. He says it is pretty much agreed upon in the industry now that all the oils, greases, solvents and other chemicals a mechanic comes in contact with daily do in fact make their way into your system and it is pretty much a fact that a lot of these can be very harmful down the road sometime. Yes, he does tear them and they aren't quite like doing things bare-handed, and he misses his fingernails as scrapers etc. but overall he says he gets by quite well. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I've tried it myself and it actually works reasonably well.

I Worked for a printing company and ran a large printing press, we constantly had our hands in ink and grease mixed with solvents and water from offset printing and spent lotsa time cleaning our hands before starting up press after a maintenance problem, they did get us some latex gloves about 8 years ago and they sure helped at work, I Use them working on tractors now that i'm retired on greasy jobs & painting. Yup, I try keeping a pair in my glove box of my truck so when I'm up the road fixing in the feild I can put those on, then take them off when it's time to drive home. Nitril or latex doesn't matter to me, I just prefer the clean hands after... I always wear them now when doing oil changes and such, they're just a great thing to have.

Yep, I wear cheap flimsy vinyl ones when using a grease gun or repacking wheel bearings. Don't do enough oily and greasy stuff to remember them all the time, though.

They are very useful, especially when you have to reference a manual or a computer for parts or info. You guys will like this, but my wife used to laugh at me for using them when I changed the kids' p00py diapers. It worked great, when the diaper was off I would hold it in one hand, pull the glove off that hand and over the diaper, then switch hands and pull the other glove over it from the other side. That thing was hermetrically sealed so no diaper smell and no trips to the trash can outside in 10 degree weather. Absoulutely priceless IMHO!

i wish i could have had gloves when i worked for a dealer . they would have been nice when cleaning parts of grease and oil . i had very short finger nails as i was always breaking them . i thought it was cause solvents dried them out so much .

Yes, I have worn rubber/latex gloves for 10 years. Did it by accident at first while doing hydraulic work and wear them whenever really greasy or dirty. They work wonderful. Also, I wear in cool or cold weather and they are like a thin glove. I buy gloves by the two-pack at Sam's club for $9.50 and get 200 individual gloves. Bonus to staying clean is the chemical or solvent thing and I always wear with spray chemicals or while spray painting. Yes, people will tease you at first and I never really got over that.

Generally I don't wear gloves, but do on some occasions. I started wearing them this year handling fertilizer because I got tired of that in cuts on my hands, and the hang nails all the time.... Otherwise, if I'm into a lot of grease, or the parts washer, I use a product called Zep Glove. It's basically a moisturiser you apply before you start that works into your hands. IT prevents oil and solvents from working into your hands, and also prevents your hands from drying out and cracking when using solvents like varasol.... and then your hands clean up easily afterwards too.

Sure makes it easy to clean your fingernails afterward. But if you are handling tiny parts, glooves might make you clumsier.

I ALWAYS used to never use Gloves, But I firmly believe, that it is a very real Hazard... As One has said DOWN the ROAD later on..I won't ever get in Oil or other solvents without protection of Nitrile gloves,Larry

I bought some nitrile gloves recently at the local Harbor Freight store. A friend of mine has a auto repair shop, and he and all his mechanics wear them. I don't think that todays gas and oils are the same as they were 30 years ago either. Different formulations and also refining practices mean a lot more additives to the fluids, with who knows what side effects.

You shouldn't soak your skin in anything you wouldn't want splashed in your eyes or mouth. Nitrile gloves are the way to go.

You are right, only problem is I can not find any Nitile gloves large enough. They are so tight that I rip a lot of them and they cause my hands to go to Sleep occasionally. I went to Checkers and bought a pair of those Mechanix Gloves and they are alright, but they get in the way a lot. However I will continue to wear them when appropriate. See Ya' John

I think it's a good idea to use nitrile gloves. Your post reminds me of my german mechanic friend. I was in his shop one day (a large 5 bay shop which he heats totally with waste oil burned in a stove made by Behr) just before noon. He said "you like shrimps?" I said "yep". He said, "good we have shrimps for lunch". He then washed his hands ( never wears gloves) with diesel fuel, wiped them off with newspapers and we took off for this "all the shrimp you can eat" place. We were sitting at the bar for about an hour devouring huge quantities of shrimp by hand and washing them down with suds. He said "good shrimps, heh?" I said "yep".

Back in the late fifties and early sixties I worked at a Ford transmission plant and we would wash up for lunch using triclorethylene. Didn't have any idea it was harmful to the liver back then. Found out later that it was absorbed through the skin and causes liver cancer. They got rid of the hot dip triclor tanks and started using the Typhoon wash machines instead. They also issued rubber gloves for anyone comming into contact with transmission oil.

I use them especially when working on something extremely greasy or around solvents. It helps on cleaning up your hands if you even have too. the only thing is you want to be carefull around things that are warm they just don't hold up

The nitrile ones can also handle the solvents and greases that you come into contact with. A little baby powder in them before you put them on keeps your hands dry and make the gloves easy to remove.

I like the nitrile gloves a lot.

With mechanical work, the best thing is that my hands don't smell like grease, used oil, carb cleaner, etc. when I'm eating lunch.

We even use them in the field for harvesting and bunching greens when it is cold in the morning. Keeping your hands dry makes it much warmer.

You dont have to use them every second, but oils and cleaners etc., are very well known carcinogens. Once you get used to the idea of having a few extra tools sitting on the fender or whatever, like an open pocket knife for instance, you get by really well using the gloves. Also rubber handled screwdrivers work better with gloves than the hard plastic handles.

I've watched a few folks with their ego pride exposed, come up and say things like " gloves are for sissys" and stuff like that, but a quick smile and no verbal reply really gets them.

If you are going to wear gloves routinely, I second the recommendation for nitrile. Research latex allergy.

Use the nitrile rubber gloves they are much more chemical resistant and stronger.

i used gloves when i was an automotive painter. the thinners and cleanup solvents started to make my hands dry out and crack badly. agreed, gloves are not like barehanded, but they did help preserve my skin. sometimes i still use gloves when working around greasy machinery, but they are a bit uncomfortable.

I have a box of latex gloves in with the oil changing stuff and use long cuff nitril (sp?) gloves when working with ag herbicides. The problem with either one is that my hands sweat so bad, especially in the tight disposible latex gloves,This makes them very uncomfortable to wear.Anyone found an answer to that problem ?

Try using the 'sleeves' that artificial inseminators use. Very loose fitting, reach up to your armpits, good single serice items. Handy when changing oil filters too- grab the spin-off, peel the sleeve off with the filter and oil inside, trash the entire thing. I had a box left over after selling the dairy cows- they come in handy for any oil or grease work.

A few years back, i read a story in the newspaper about those plastic gloves catching fire when stored in a cupboard, etc. Something about spontaneous combustion, i think. I checked the pack i had on my shelf, and, they were rather warm on the inside. So, they went outside, into a metal cabinet there. Haven't got hot out there.
