Do all safes turn the dial the same way to open?

Dad had an old safe and I have the numbers but can not open it.

Do you start to the right 2 rounds and stop on the first number.

Then to the left 1 round and stop on the second number.

And then stop on the third number.

Or are some safes different?

Gary

Try this: Left 5 rounds and stop on the first number.

Then to the right 1 round past sec # and stop on the second number next time around.

And left and stop on the third number.

This sequence works on some but not all.

Well Gary,
I'd just forget about it and go about things the old fashioned way.
Safe "Secks" aint all it's cracked up to be.

I open safes at work.....a lot...

If it's a 4 digit combination, start to the left. If it's a 3 digit combination start to the right.

So, turn at least 4 times to the left and stop on the first number.

turn 3 times right and stop on the third time.

turn 2 times left and stop on the second time.

turn back to the last number...

Good luck!

Aloha, I would first spin the knob clockwise a couple of times and then set it to the first number. Go thru the rest of the numbers and on the final number, go very slow and keep a little tension on the handle. As you turn the knob, it usually starts to get a little harder to turn and that is when it should open.

Mahalo,

try the numbers starting both ways, if that doesn't do it try reversing the numbers. I know a couple of people who will write the numbers in reverse order to make things even more difficult.

I breezed through the other responses, but not too closely. Here is my response_ Make several turns to the right until you get to the first number you know. Turn to the left, GOING PAST ZERO, to the next number you know..... ..... then turn to the right to the third number. That's how it works on our safe- but don't ask me MY numbers, OK????? ?????

On my sasfe in the garage I "pack it" about 5-6 turns counter clockwise and then go into the combination and it works well. Old safes are a neat object. saw one just tonight in a bar in Cambridge that is really neat. Out side doors and inside chamber. Cool

Turn the dial counter clockwise about 3 or 4 turns then turn it slowly 3 to 4 turns clockwize listen to here if the parts click each time that you turn it one full turn. If this happens then everything is free. so then give a whole bunch of clockwise turne doesn't matter how much just more than amount of numbers that you have. This will line up the tumblers. Then turn back 2 turns to number if you have 3 then 1 in the opposite direction then back to the last number. if this doesn't work then try it in the counter clockwise first. A lot of safs have 4 numbers and a key besure that you have all the numbers and look for a key slot near the handle. If there is a key you need that too.

Not on mine you dont.

Spin it clock wise until its on the start number then you spin the other way (counter clockwise) past the next number two times and stop at it on the third round. Back the other way (clockwise) and past the next number one time then stop on it the second time. Then a part of a spin back the other way stopping on it. Turn handle and it opens, hopefully.

I think its about a 1900 safe. I have the numbers taped to the bottom in case my kids need the combo if I get killed. I hope they find it.

Heard about a guy who bought a big wheeled safe at auction, did not have combination. Went to move it and noticed a piece of paper stuck to wheel. Yup, it was the combination. 75$ of coin inside.

Yikes! I better take those pennies and hide em someplace else.

Oh, the safe, is a "Victor"; Victor Safe Company, Cincinnati, O.

My father bought it from an old Doctor that went out of business in the 1950's.

The two I have used, you have to turn at least 4 times counterclockwise. Then stop on the first number. Then, go clockwise and stop on the second number the third time it comes up. Then, back counterclockwise and stop on the third number the second time it comes up. Then turn it clockwise slightly until you feel slight resistance. Then move the lever to open it. I hope this helps.

Depends. Depends how the lock was set up....most first turn clockwise, then counter clockwise then clockwise. I set up my own lock and then want the same number of numbers...mine..turn 4 times clockwise, stop at number...turn counterclockwise past the number and then one turn to number, counterclockwise to 0 ...open. The other safe...turn twice clockwise, once counter clockwise, then clockwise and open.

Locks are set up differently... you'll need to mess with it...lucky you have the numbers. Problem you'll have is you'll try a few dozen turns and then it'll pop open and you'll forget what you did.
