The oil pressure switch is a redundant circuit. It will not keep it from running. The circuit through the relay is the primary power circuit. There is a 20 amp fuse in the underhood power center for the relay circuit. There is also a fuel pump power tap which is usually close to the fuel pump relay. It is on a red wire and sticks out of the wire loom.

If the oil pressure sender is at fault wouldn/t that affect the reading on the oil pressure gauge in the dash? Oil pressure gauge works fine all the time. Thanks, Don

Yes the pump is good, run jumper wires to it and it runs fine, will try the oil pressure sender and see if that helps, if not it gets wired of the ignition switch. Thanks for the help, Don

Like they said, It's probably the oil pressure switch on the back of the engine. We have a 94 and if I remember right, you can remove the starter relay and turn the key to start and there is a relay on the right firewall that runs the fuel pump in the start position and you should be able to hear it, if I remember right.

The fuel pump operation is controlled by the oil pressure sender, which commonly fails. (Also, I believe the fuel pump gets operated during cranking.)

Also, do you know for SURE that the fuel pump is GOOD?

They commonly fail, too!

The reason the fuel pump is controlled by the oil pressure switch is so it shuts down when the engine does in a wreck, HOPEFULLY preventing a fire.

Crash safety is the ONLY reason for the setup they have.

As far as that fuel pump in the frame rail, it DOESN'T care if it's powered directly whan the key switch is "ON".

Actually the oil pressure relay is also there to shut down the engine when the oil pressure drops too low (like a broken oil pump drive). Supposedly helps to save a minor repair (scored bearings) from a major (like new long block).

My sister's diesel didn't have one. When the dealer's mechanic replaced the radiator he forgot to hook up the oil cooler line, took about 3 miles to pump the oil onto the road and destroy the motor.

It's quite possilbe to wreck a vehicle hard enough to split the fuel lines without shutting off the engine immediately. Particualrly if there is an electric fuel pump and the line you split is the return line.
