I purchased an in-ground fencing system yesterday at TSC that came with 1,000 feet of wire. This is enough to surround just under an acre, I believe, but the area I'd like to fence is about two acres.

The cost of extra wire at TSC was prohibitive: $44.99 for another 500 feet! Is there a cheaper place to buy insulated copper wire? Would an electrical supply store have similar wire at a cheaper cost? I don't know the gauge offhand, but it isn't exactly hefty stuff...

If you have a very active pooch it just does'nt seem to be much use. Daughter has unit and has been no luck since she has done it. Dogs make a made dash and they know once across they free, then they won't come back across, train your dogs helps in some cases but I would just lay it out first and try it see if it wil even stop your pooch first, because they are not the answer in alot of cases we have found out. Some pooches the only way they stay is penned,. Been at it two years now try to train, its not going to happen thou and he is at my place now already jumped the wire

I really would like to help you with a recommendation for the proper wire and a reasonable source where you could purchase it, but your request reminds me of a really close friend of mine who used to be the inventory control manager of an invisible fence manufacturer. Worked there several years, and it was especially hard for him every January, when he had to fill out the year end inventory reports, regarding invisible fence that was in stock. Poor guy went nuts..... just trying to count all that..... ..eventually did him in. Still miss him. Hope you find what you're looking for..... ...

Make sure you use the flags and spend plenty of time training. Go by the book. If your dog learns he can make a run at it, it won't ever work on that dog. I used one with great results and it got hit by lightning a year later. The dog still never left the yard but he would gain about a foot a year for ten years. I would solder the conections if you can and keep fresh batteries in the coller for aleast 6 months.

I've been investigating the same thing before putting one in for my dog that's gonna enclose 4 1/2 acres. In my case I called a buddy that's an electrician who can get me a 16 guage stranded for 11 cents a foot on a 1500 foot roll or 12guage solid for 09 cents a foot on a 2500 foot roll. Since my buddy can use the 12ga for what he does he said he'd foot the cost of anything over what I needed out of the 2500 foot roll. Now I've just got to find out if solid wire is usuable. As for burying it I've got another buddy that independently contracts for the cable company burying their lines so he's gonna pull it in for me with one of his cable plows. If your planning to cover a large distance this is about the only way to do it as easily and nonintrusively as possible. I know around my place I've constantly got ATV's and other equipment going so I'm gonna get him to pull it in at least 18 inches so the chance of damage is very slight. I called PetSmart about the burial depth awhile back and anything up to 4 feet deep is OK for their systems so 18 inches should be just fine. I don't believe you can rent the large machines like my buddy uses for a reasonable price, but if your not going very deep you might be able to find a smaller one, that would do just as good, for alot less money. You might just try checking the yellow pages and doing some calling around or simply keep your eyes open in the residentual neighborhoods for the guys pulling in the cable connections and find someone to do it "on the side". I know around here the guys that work for my buddy all take their machines home at night so you might be to get someone like that to do it on a weekend for a reasonable, cash, price. Good luck.

I have purchased a similar system and have not installed it yet. I am wondering how you plan to bury wire? Have you figured out a simple way yet? Chris

I'll be using a sidewalk edger to make the slit for the wire. If I set the edger as low as it will go, it makes a slit about 2 inches deep.

The manual suggest burying anywhere from 1-3 inches, so this should work fine.

I used a transplanter and cut a slit. Then I rolled the wire and simply used my hands to slide into the slit under the sod. A single bottom plow would work great. I've not cut mine yet, and my lawn is as short as it can get cut with my mower (so I don't have to cut as often!)

On the invisible fence we installed I simply went to a supply house and bought 500' roll of 16 gauge THHN electrical wire and it is still there. About 1/2 price of the original specified and had the same marking on the wire itself.

Check with any local electric shop for wire of the same gauge and it should be fine. I got some used wire for our system. It was a wet spring and it just pulled right up out of the yard. I had permission. LOL

before you open it all up look at the wireless system out now.
it works basically the same way just in reverse, if the dog gets to far from the transmitter it goes to shocking, you can plug them in in the house and they will give the dog a circle around the house to stay in

I looked at the wireless, but it just didn't cover enough area.

The one at TSC ($389.99) covered about 90 feet in any direction, if I remember right.
