West central Ohio. We used to never see them but could hear there bone chillin' chants. Last few years starting to see them more regularly. Healthy and curious. I heard there is a man in a neighboring county that raises the critters. He is instructed to release a breading pair near the coordinates that have had an increase in deer versus auto reports.

Coyotes usually only kill for food and will usually only kill what they can eat. On the other hand, "domestic coyotes" will pack up and kill for fun. We had 300-400 sheep and never lost many to coyotes, but when some neighbor"s sweet little Fluffy and his 2 or 3 pals or some dumped strays got into the sheep around 6am, it was a slaughter. Needless to say, there was all out war on any and all canines running loose.

Here in NC and eastern Tn we have a lot of coyotes and especially the alpaca farmers have problems with them. Their answer is to have a Great Pyrenees dog around the farm. Coyotes will stay far away. Also, one friend who waas losing calves to coyotes got himself some llamas who will kill coyotes by kicking them to death. Works well for him

This morning I talked to a coyote hunter who got two of them on my place last sunday. I never even knew we had them until a few years ago, but now I'll see a few every fall during harvest. I even had a mountain lion come running out of the corn rows in front of the combine this fall. We live in the open plains here but it seems these critters are moving in here too. They are really hurting the pheasant population. Jim

No coyote problems this year. I usually shot them when I seem them and give the to the court house to get money. This winter I have only saw 5 of them. They never bothered my animals at all. In the fall at night when I plow to two in the morning I see them watch me by sitting on the fence line. I have a lot of red fox this year. Been trapping them cause for a good hide is worth a 100 bucks.

100yards from the house and 60 yards from the turkey outdoor run. The Border Collie barks up an awful fuss and stands between the turkey's and the coyotes. I did educate one about 2:00 on a still and frosty morning with the 300Win. I made a lousy shot trying to hold the flashlight and the rifle. I heard the echo at leats 1/2 a dozen times. Figured the coyote was mortally wounded the way it was rolling in the grass and yelping. Didn't want to go and investigate with the flashlight and rifle in hand incase some bunny hugger had called the authorities here who believe civilians shouldn't have firearms. Next day however the coyote was gone. It must have crawled off and spread the word among them to stay away. Only heard them and dog go on full alert twice in the past three months. Used to hear and see them a couple of times per week. They must be staying away from around here as the local wild turkey population feels safe and has took over the wheat that didn't get ploughed down.

Coyotes are always around my place they love the compost pile where i bury my stillborn and dead pigs. Don't seem to have to much trouble with the cattle though. Around NE Missouri we run them with dogs gives something to do sometimes the dogs will catch a coyote then the fight is on. Did see some old cows with some 2-3 day old calves kill a coyote one time the coyote tried to sneak across the lot the cows where in the old cows pretty much ran it over and kicked it to death

we have a lot of coyotes in our area and they particularly like the hay fields. We lost our little dog a year ago just before Christmas to them. She was 14 years old and survived as long as she did because she looked like and walked like a skunk. She was an avid mouse and mole hunter and would be right out there in the new swaths looking for a victim. The coyotes would be out there as well but never seemed to give her a second look. However her luck did run out. So if you are looking for a small dog that has a good chance of surviving around coyotes get one that looks like a skunk!!! this picture is of her guarding a carrot that she liked to dig out of the garden.

We've had the same female coyote/bush wolf on the property for the last six years. A loner, she seemed attracted to machinery and would watch tractors by the hour.

She died Sunday night. Suffering from mange, she succumbed to the cold and possible infection from frostbite sores. The timber guys found her under their truck Monday morning.

She kept the rodents in check, provided me with endless stories for urban friends, and occasionally allowed me to impress a visitor. On more than one occasion I was yakking on about the coyote while touring the woodlot, and out she walked, checked out the new voices, and trotted away.

I looked at the carcass this afternoon. She was quite well fed, even plump, and about the build of a standard poodle, maybe two inches shorter. I saw her last spring through my telescope, buck naked, plump and pregnant. A biologist expressed amazement that she had survived a winter without hair. I guess her luck ran out with this cold snap.

We'll miss her, but six years is a pretty good run for a wild animal.

I've got a whole den of the things that live out in my pasture. Last time I saw 'em all together, there were two adults and two pups.

I like to see wildlife like that around and as long as they don't bother me and mine, I sure leave 'em alone.

A lot of folks don't. They shoot 'em on sight.

I lost a rooster a few weeks ago, I discovered several rings of feathers and blood in the yard but no sign of even a bone. I found an area that had been dug out under the fence but at the time had no idea what it was. About a week later I spotted a coyote during the day a few hundred yards behind the barn and it ran into a neighboring grapefruit grove when it saw me. A few days ago my dog (a beagle) was barking early in the morning which isn't unusual but she sounded a little different so I went out to take a look. Sure enough coming across the field were two coyotes. I ran back in the house and grabbed the closest gun I could get my hands on (a 22 revolver) and managed to get a good shot at one of them as he had stopped about 75 feet away and was watching my dog. I really think my dog was trying to get the coyotes attention to allow me a shot, she's pretty darn smart. I fired and the coyote jumped straight up and took off running upon returning to earth and headed to that same grapefruit grove. I have not seen any coyotes since then and my dog has been fairly quiet the last few nights so I'm hoping the coyote either bleed to death or moved on to another county.

Hey Guy,

You do know that coyotes will call dogs out and sometimes kill 'em? Especially small dogs.

Had that happen before.

No, I didn't know that. How about cats? I'm missing a couple of cats too, but since they were males I just figured they went on the hunt for a girlfriend in town.
Oh well, I'm keeping my eyes open.

No, not that I know of.

But, dogs have that "wild" ancestorial, inborn thing deep in their brains and can be pulled out by those coyotes howlin'.

A little dog doesn't stand a chance against those undomesticated coyotes. Heck, they even eat their own when they die.

Oh Sure,

Come right in the yard.

Not a problem to me tho as they don't bother a thing. They are scavengers, don't leave that big of a footprint and will always clean up the roadkill.

Now, the rattlesnakes, weasels and mountain cats are another story entirely. They will go after the live stuff. :>(

Not disbute you Allan but they did get a calf of mine once.

Was fine and up sucking at 7:00 pm new born.

10:00 pm mother went over the hill to eat with other cows.

7:00 am it was gone and the hide and bones were all that was left.

Coyote tracks all around it.

But they are in our yard also and don't seem to bother much.

I agree with IaGary, in 2005, I lost 4 calves to coyotes. Now, having a problems with buzzards attacking sleeping calves. Now, the coyotes only pass thru, I have shot at them so much that they seem to find a different route.
Good Luck.....

I have two heifer calves on the ground now....and a lot of coyotes around....wanna come down and shoot a few... it would be nice to have someone who can actually hit a coyote and not something else.

Donkeys wil work on coyotes for sure. When we had cattle we had a couple jack we were gonna leave in with the cows. Problem was he would chase the cows! We put him in the field between the cows and the coyotes and never had a problem with them although I saw him fight a few. Pretty impressive. Been around horses mmost of my life and always see them turn around and kick, dang donkeys will try to stomp a coyote with their front hooves!
