OT Truck hit the 100,000 mile mark today

My 2000 Chevy 1500 4X4 5.3L V8 hit 100,000 miles right before I pulled in the drive on the way home from work today. Has been very reliable for the year or so I have had it. Just curious if there is anything I should watch after this? I run mobil 1 full synthetic 10w-30 year round and change it myself. I have tires rotated every 5-6000 miles and have it greased every time. I get about 13-15 miles per gallon on average but I let it run for 15min before I leave for work every morning and for 5min on the way home.l Anyone else have anything about these trucks I should watch for? miles mean nothing its the service that does. Run rural mail route find out what vehicles are really made of. Currently have 2005 chey blazer was new then already way over the 100000 miles and starting to replace knuckles etc. All prior vehicles have been dodge products and been having way better luck with them,the last unit had well over 400,000 on it and is still be used as backup for another carrier last i knew. The next unit will go back to dodge since have proven better for the long haul for me. I don't care what brand they are you can get lemon in anything mechanical. Hardest part these days is vehicle without all the electric options,thats what doesn't take the dirt when the doors get full of it. average use has been brakes every 3 months at most,tires well lets just say I rotate them from flat to up

I agree, mail route has to be about the hardest thing on any vehicle. I have a 95 Toyota Corolla with 473+K on it, would still be using on route but under hood wiring is oil soaked from blown exhaust donut and must have a short in it as it took to eating alternators. The current route car is another 95 Corolla, but a wagon instead. It will turn over 200K sometime this month. Trans fluid looks TERRIBLE in this car, but talked to transmission shop as to whether should flush this trans, they said from what I told them the fluid looked like when I bought the car just to keep doing what I am doing, that is, change the fluid and filter every summer and not worry about what the fluid looks like after the change. They agree a flush would likely break loose residue I really don't want in the valve body or lines. But, having said that, I find the engines in most modern cars will far outlast the transmissions if the trans are neglected. I run a synthetic blend in the trans and engine on the route car, full synthetic in my wifes car as it was bought with low miles on it.

Make sure to replace fuel filter!! Number one killer of fuel pumps! Pumps are $$$$/

Mike, Not to one-up ya, But most all trucks or cars will go 100K miles + if you take care of them.
My 97 F150, Supercab, 4x4, 4.6 V8. auto, Long box, has,,, as of yesterday 323575 miles on her.
The first 12.5K were allready on it for that is when I got her. I run Chevron Delo 400 15-40 oil since I got her. So who knows, I will bet yours has a lot of use left in her. Good Luck.

Wow, I remember buying a car with that low a mileage once, many years ago. :-)

You're heading into the mileage area where maintenance costs tend to go up for a while. This is when radiators spring leaks, hoses need replacing, the transmission decides it wants to be rebuilt, etc.

It's not cost prohibitive compared to the cost of a new vehicle, but generically, the free ride period tends to start ending about now.

I drove my old Chevy (2500 HD)138K miles and traded it just a couple of months ago. In that time the only thing I ever had to have done to it besides regular oil changes, wheel alignments, flushes etc. was a seal in the transfer case - twice - and rear brake pads. It was still running on the original front pads! Though the dealer told me they were about due.
I just can't say enough good about that pickup.
It was the most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned.

Not trying to steal the show here but yours is just getting broken in ,I worked for a shuttle company and we had E150 fords with 302's that were still going with 5-700,000 miles on them but the trannys had been rebuilt about 5 times although .

Oh by the way these vans were very very poorly maintained clogged air filters , 20-25000 mile oil changes and they still ran this long changing oil every 3000 miles is such a waste of money as this proved it to me .

I got a '96 Chevy k2500 EXTcab with vortec 350 got 170000 on it know about every 80000 seems like gotta replace those darnintake gaskets other than that all i have done is alternator, waterpump, and distributor cap. I put the last 80000 on it and about 60000 of them where either hauling old molines or cattle beat it pretty hard trying to pull out of some of the cattle lots. Kinda just us it for a farm truck wife got tired of riding in it to church after I had tracked hog and cattle manure in it so went a bought a duramax crew cab to keep as a good truck just hope it holds up like the old one. NOw that I brag on the old one it will probably fall apart tommorrow

I have done rite good replacing the water pump to block gaskets, they do leak but I have yet to see a water pump leak on a 5.3 so keep a eye out fer a coolant leak around the front of the engine that looks like a water pump leak, its will be the gaskets leak�in. If you keep the engine serviced they have proven to dependable. They do seam to knock a little cold but I have yet seen were it will turn into a problem. Make sure you turn on the AC once a week so the AC compressor oil does not drain back into the compressor and lock it up and throws a belt. I have had a few do that but only needed the belt replaced and inform the owner to make sure the AC izz not on during start up. Also gotta luv the false ABS brake activation and the incorrect fuel gage but a mechanic has got to make a living so if they were perfect I would starve to death. O yes and the steering intermediate shaft that knocks down their around yer feet a rite good kill.fer me also and when they will not idle. Tho not perfect a dang good truck.

I basicly have the same truck. Except mine is a '98 k1500, 5.7, automatic. Just flipped 140,000. 3rd set of tires, 2nd set of front brakes, orig rear brakes. Oil gets changed every 3500 ( Mobil drive clean 5000 ) uses 1/2 quart in 1500. Trans fluid, filter, trans case fluid, diffies oil, all get changed every 35,000 period! I have replaced... timing chain set, water pump, hoses, dist cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel pump, shocks, u-joints... all in the last 5,000 miles. Still has the orig steering components. Truck has absolutly NO rust on it anywhere. Wife and I are betting on how long it will last. Definately THE best, most dependable vehicle I have ever owned hands down.

I can't really add anything...my truck is still almost new. It's a 96 Dodge with only 112,000 on it. I fully EXPECT to double that. Mobil 1, changed once a year, never add a drop.

Then there's my 'new' car, a 2001 or 2002 (?) Pontiac GP with 118,000...same treatment as above, looking forward to another 5 years of service.

The old '87 Toyota PU with 181,000 change the oil when I feel guilty and it runs just super. Looking forward to 300,000.

Your truck should be well above average from the way you care for it. Watch that the brake pads dont get low enough to tear up the rotors. You can expect to replace the sealed front wheel bearing/hub assy sometime between now and 200,000 miles, change the trans fluid and coolant every 30,000 or so and continue your good care. I know of a 98 K25 454 that is still running at almost 500,000 on the original engine and trans with no major repairs. He has run Mobil 1 oil and trans fluid in it for the last 400,000. He parked it because the ORIGINAL transfer case chain finally failed and broke the housing.

Got a 1994 GMC 4x4 with 262000 miles. All original motor transmission and rear end. The poor truck did nothing but pull loaded stock trailers up to 180000 miles. Got it from my sister 2 years ago after she smashed a deer with it. I was always leery of this truck at first because of the miles, but has proven to be very dependable.

The people I work with have a 94 3/4 ton Chevy with a 454 and automatic. The tranny finally gave up last spring at 332000 tough miles. Everything else is original except for the water pump and I don't know how many sets of brakes. It did reject the radiator on a regular basis but I guess that's kind of a 454 thing. The engine ran darned hot most of the time,even to the point that the tranny would go to the 'protection mode' and stay in second gear.The fuel pump conked out at about 250000. The factory must have done something right with the paint because it looks really good for sitting in the blistering western prairie sun in the summer and the snowy Iowa winters. Jim

I'v never been much of a dodge fan , but I bought a cummins and it came wrapped it a dodge . It had 298,000 when I bought it more now and still runs well.The fellow I got it from also has another one and it has about 600,000 on it ,so far all it
has had is shaft seal in the inj pump , a water
pump ,and a set of injectors . I sure of this , because I do all of the work on it .

I'm big on oil changes/greasing as well, but the two most common causes for engine failure are overheating and running out of/low on oil.

Yes it is cold here 7 deg right now, I'm not a fan of a cold truck in the morning. For some reason the cold really bothers me in the morning. And I like to relax a bit after work and do so while letting the truck run a bit before leaving. Mike.

That warm up will go a long way to increasing the life of your auto trans. Changing the fuel filter atleast once a year will help keep that in the tank electric fuel pump alive as long as possible, thats another item that fails at 100,000--200,000 miles

A guy I know had 240,000 miles on a Chevy 1/2 ton. I havent talked to him in about 5 years. I think it all comes down to how well you take care of it, oil changes, lubes, highway vs. city driving.

Got one that beats most, just bought a 96 GMC half ton from my company, had been one of the maintenance guys work trucks. He is a nut on maintenance and it shows, very sharp truck with extended cab and aluminum topper, and he changed oil ever 2,500 miles with only Mobil 1 synthentic. It had 324,000 miles but I didn't think I did to bad, only gave 500 for it.
