of all the things i've done to improve my welding, whether just "looking up how to's" and studying them (i'm a "self-taught mud dauber") to going out and buying a wire feed welder.....nothing has done more toward making me weld the way i'd like to, stick or wire, than the purchase of my auto-darkening welding helmet. i'd just like to know what the rest of you think of them???

by the way (keeping on subject) i use my welders to work on my tractors.

I got one after a long day at work welding square nuts standing up on a bracket for tensioning conveyor belts. I still had about 1/2 to go, my neck was killing me from flipping all day (too easy to loose position if I flipped it by hand) and the weld wasn't always started where I wanted it too.

I bought the helmet that day after work at Prax Air, and the next day I finished welding in 1/2 the time. I'm convinced. I will agree that it isn't dark enough for my likeing, but I just wear a pair of tinted safety glasses underneath if I'm welding for any length of time.

I no longer work at that particular shop and now my helmet has a home in the shop at home. I like it, but if I was goona keep weldig alot for work I was going to buy a more expensive one that had a variable shade.

I guess it's fair enough to say I'm 22 as well, so maybe it's just because I'm a young buck...

Love my auto darkening helmet. Was getting so I couldn't see with my bifocals. Problem went away with the new helmet. I'll never go back.

jhill52 OK, I'm confused. How does a autodarkening helmet replace bi-focals? I have trouble with tilting my head back far enough to see clearly when welding, went to a hand held helmet so I can hold it away form my face a little so I can get a clear view. I've been told you can get a lense that matches your prescription for glasses but haven't bot one yet. Chris

i have those lenses in both my helmets and they're great. no glasses under the hood anymore. they're more like the reading/magnifying glasses you can buy at the drug store, they won't match your prescription exactly...but they work great! try some.

Personally, I think they are completely overrated. My guess is you're getting better with time, and giving welding an honest effort. I know auto hoods can be convenient, but give credit where credit is due. I don't necessarilly think there is anything wrong with using one, but it's just a hood.

Mike....started at 18...now 67 thinking long and hard about getting one. My collection of assorted welding helmets still lacks an auto one..... at this stage of the game, it doesn't seem that important to me. For a younger fella it's a great thing.....it improves coordination. In my beginning days the instructor handed you 5 Lbs. of rod and said.....burn this up then i'll start to teach you something.....

Have Fun
Steve

I will never ever again use an auto helmit. I've had my eyes 1 time to many because of them and will not use one. I use only 24 caret gold lens now days. I also don't use mig welders since I like a good strong weld and a stick welder makes a stronger weld then mig does. I retired from welding and got my eyes burned to many time when I worked as a welder because of the auto types

I weld (sometimes for a living) and like my standard flip up 2X4 gold lens helmet best.

Unless I'm doing light work with a mig turned down, or just lightly tacking pieces together for welding, I'm using my old 2X4 flip lens hood with a gold lens.

Most, if not all of the auto shade (that I've tried) helmets don't go dark enough to weld all day (for me). If they do they are real dark and not like the gold lens at all. Then they are a real pain when trying to grind and prepare welds between stringers. They are always tripping off as the grinder starts throwing sparks. Also I prefer a clear not a #2 if I'm hood down, and not welding.

hmmmm...my helmet has about five different shade adjustments...the darkest is WAY too dark for me. it also had a "grind" setting, but i don't use it. i have another mask for that. i agree about the #2 tho...just as soon take it off.

The outfit I now work for has about 120 employees. 100 of us use welding helmets. About half of us won't use an "auto lens hat". About half of them won't use nothing else. I have noticed though that most of the old hats are on old heads.
