My old Gateway is getting too old, also crashing alot. Time to trade her in. I've had alot of problems with the Gateway brand. I use it to mostley chat with you guys, but the kids like to play a few games, and do their reports and hommework on it. Any body have any sugestions...good or bad? How about those Apple computers? Is this new VISTA system gonna give problems? I have little knowledge, even less paitents with these fool machines. Any help would be great. Thanks, Mike

I have picked up two HP"s from Costco. They both still work great except for the one with "ME". The girlfriends relief worker keeps doing the "Tech thing" and I get to spend hours undoing the mess she makes.

Not sure if it is still customary, but the HP I bought from Walmart had so much spyware already on it that it would not run. It was also misconfigured with a low speed bus with high speed components. At it's fighting weight, it is a dog. Customer Service was a joke that was unfortunately lost on me because I did not speak the proper language. I did understand enough to hear that although my computer was less than 2 weeks old, the warranty had possibly expired. It was also advertised with a CD+R/DVD-Rom. Careful inspection of the user manual revealed that it came with either, not the combo drive that was advertised on the box. I will buy a Dell when I feel I have recovered enough of this investment to pitch it. I sure hope this helps and sorry about the vent, Aaron

I've been using this ancient HP for longer than i can remember....still has windows 98 on it! been a great machine. I bought a new E machine 6 months ago and it's still in the box!

I'm not a computer geek and play no games on one. I don't do anything but surf the net and email...so why dump a ton of money in a super duper machine? I'd lay money that most of us, use one like i do...it's a toy..not a true tool.

Therefore, i used the logic that one of the packaged computers from WalMart was 'good enough'...just like this old HP is/was. remember, if you have an old machine...most anything being sold today is light years ahead of it. $500 is plenty to spend on a web surfer and email machine.

I just retired from working in computer repair for 40 years and the last 10 on pc products kids games esp the high action and or graphics are what needs the bigest best ther is to run them right if you limit the kids games any brand of pc is fine go with which is best buy all of the pc are built from low bidders on the componetes if you have kids in school find out what computer the schools use and get one thats compatable that will help the kids out if they can do somr of the work at school and bring it home to finish or vice versa i have had 2 hp pc with no problems and the current pc is a e mach i would pick a pc with an established software like xp or what mac runs the vista will have start up problems until its has been out for a few years unless you like downloading a lot of updates from manufacture

If you get a Dell and it goes bad, a live person will come to your house and fix it.

Go with the Mac, no viruses and everything just works.

As Paul said, if your kids are into the very latest shoot-em up games, then for that they are not the best as they tend to get written for windows first. Although, now that you can run windows on the new Macs, maybe that's not such an issue any more. Mine's not new enough to do that, so can't tell you first hand.

If you do go with Windows, I'd vote for the Dell.

Got a top of the line Dell for Christmas from a rich relative. As far as surfing the web and the kids doing homwork it's no better than an el chepo. Save you money, Wallmart has package deals that do everthing this Dell does for a quarter of the money. Skip Apple for the kids sake because this world and their future are windows based. Try to mainly compair which windows programs actually come with the computer even this Dell that cost over a thousand bucks makes us have to buy more windows software and it's expensive. They all use slick marketing and give you free trial software that expires after you get used to it.

I work full-time in IT and all PC brands have lemons (most have common internal components, anyway).

Day-in and day-out, I give the edge to Dell, though - he didn't create that company out of nothing by NOT giving customers a pretty good bang for the buck.

If you price on their website, go to "small business", and then "smart values" on the right hand column. You'll be hard pressed to find any other deal that beats one of those on an apples-to-apples comparison. We got a friend of mine an E521 with 1Gb RAM, 160Gb drive, CD burner/DVD, AMD dual-core CPU and 19" flat screen the other day for about $650 delivered. A lot of machine for the money.

Mac's are OK. They can have virus trouble, too. Just different vulnerabilities than Windows based PCs. I don't like their price premium - and I've seen them crash, too.

With Windows PCs - the biggest trick to maintaining them in the long-haul is being very careful as to what software gets installed on them. The best trick for that is to create non-administrator accounts for the kids and put a password on the administrator account and don't let them have that. Most malicious software cannot be installed without administrative rights.

HTH,
Howard

Bob's right games really kill a computer. Keep the old for the games and the other to chat with everyone here. Some of the games the kids download to play are filled with spyware and much more. Programers for games often don't clean up after themselves and lock up memory. Locked memory takes up cpu time killing the speed of the computer, That way there games go faster.

I've had a Mac (imac G5) for almost two years now and would never go back to a Gateway or other PC.
Two main reasons: 1. No annoying anti-virus, spyware programs to buy or constantly update.

2. Everything is contained in the monitor. No modem tower to take up floor space and bang into.

I''m no tech guy at all and bought the Mac for Dummies book to start out but really didn't need it. The new Mac runs Windows easily I've read. Macs cost a little more but worth it. Hey, its only money.....

Much to my computer geek son's chagrin, I still punch away on my 4 year old E-machines which was 500 bucks brand new at Wally world. This has been in the shop office since day one. Aside from replacing 2 keyboards due to dirt failures and a lightning fried internal modem, I can't complain. Favorite son compares it to a model T. I tell him 'it gits me thar'.

Check on what your kid's schools have. Apple has always had a very strong presence in school systems. If you buy one for the kids, make sure it is compatible with what the school has- then they can start a project in either place, download to disk, and finish it in the other place. No excuse that they can't finish homework, but have time to play games.

Have someone who knows what they are doing clean out your old 'puter, and threaten the kids with death if the touch it. It is most likely more than adequate for what YOU do.

Buy the KIDS a 'puter to game on, chat with, and load up with crap.

You'll be surprised how well your's works tuned up, and keep "out of bounds" from the kids.

If you want a machine to surf the web & write a few letters, an Apple Mac Minni with your current monitor & maybe keyboard is a cool thing to look at.

If the kids demand their new games, or you have special software that needs running, then the Mac, while possible for the new Macs to run Windows, isn't the best deal.

All computer manufaturers are having issues, and the machines they turn out are either pricey, or made from lowest-cost components. So you will find all the brands to be kinda similar. Dell has had a long run of being the better low-cost brand, but they have done a bit of restructuring just now & that can change.....

I would hang on, my self, for another 6 months & let the bugs work out of Vista. It is a major thing, & I bet there is a ton of issues with compatability. New drivers, a bit of programming from all the printer, scanner, keyboard makers, etc. Just all takes time, why be on the leading edge of that sort of thing.

Don't know that I helped you much I guess.....

--->Paul

My wife started shopping for a new laptop a couple of months ago and at first the computer shop told her to wait until they went to a meeting to get the low down on the upcoming Vista. Well, she waited, and now computer shop is still inconclusive about Vista. They too have the "wait six months" attitude. Vista has more 'kid' controls so it will be asking you "do you really want to do this" several times before it will let you get into some programs. Sounds real annoying to me. I wouldn't be too worried about bugs because they will come out with fixes when needed. Oh yes, she's looking at a Dell. Jim

Aside from a few problems.. I have had great luck with HP's... I have one off-line one over 10 years old (Knock on wood)... Personally, I would wait a while , before getting one with Vista. .. Let them get the bugs out, first..
