My FIL is in the hospital, he asked me to start his truck (300-6cyl standard). After I started it in neutral, it would not shift into any gear unless I shut off the motor. I think the clutch is sticking. If that is the case, is there anyway to free it up, without taking it apart? Or am I wrong, and it is the pressure plate or throwout bearing. 98k kilometers and original clutch. Once in gear the clutch starts to engage as soon as you let out the clutch. Its been a long time since I drove standard. Thanks, NorminN.B.

I just bought a 92' F-150 dirt cheap because it had the same problem. Got it home and checked out the hydraulics and they seemed ok. Got under the dash and worked the clutch pedal by hand and found the pedal shaft bushings were shot. What a pain in the a** they are to replace, but I did it anyway. Now the clutch works perfectly. Bushing kit was 14 bucks at the Ford dealer. 12 pack of Molson ice beer was 12 bucks at the local distributor. Lostsa luck.

Fill up the clutch cylinder resevoir with brake fluid. When they get low you have harldly any pedal.

My '92 & '94 F-250's were both hydraulic linkage clutches.

The slave cylinder is terrible on those. Check to make sure it has fluid in the clutch fill tank (right above the steering column on the motor side of the firewall).

Make sure you are pressing the pedal all the way to the floor and you might try pumping it a little.

What does the FIL say? He most likely would have noticed if it had been leaking down...

Thanks, for the reply's. FIL has cancer and I don't want him to worry anymore than he has to. I will check the fluid tomorrow. There was no leaks on the garage floor. Thanks, NorminN.B.

It's probably just an adjustment issue. The clutch plate/pressure plate and throwout bearing should not be worn out in 98,000 miles unless the truck has been abused. Don't know if that model has mechanical linkage or hydraulic?

I'm sure there are some experts that can give a more definitive answer.
