Wife saw that 1066 for the first time yesterday.

She don't understand what the fuss was all about.

She said it just looks like another tractor to her.

I asked if she saw any pictures of it before it was painted and she said no.

So I showed her a picture of before. She thought it looked about the same to her, just another tractor.

Then she asked how do you drive 9 of them at once?

Woman???? They just don't get it.

Gary, Your living a life many a men only dream about. And life is O so short. Keep doing the give and take with the wife and keep doing what you enjoy(working on and with the tractors etc). I predict a long and healthy life and marriage for you. I applaud you for being a true American farmer, gentleman, good husband, and father.

I've really enjoyed reading your posts. From what I have seen of Iowa it reminds me alot of what farming used to be like here in Indiana in the 1970's and 80's. Back then everybody had some form of livestock and smaller equipment. Now the livestock and fencerows are gone. The art of animal husbandry is gone. Now it's all just row crops and a rush to get over the most land you can possibly get over.

Gary I farm 40 acres and what ever other acres I can pickup down the road. There are 3 tractors 2 bobcats and many other pieces of haevy equipment around the yard. Whenever I want to by a new piece of equipment the Wife says I want to go on vacation. That way we both have a good time on vacation and at home using the new machine. She usually runs one of the bobcats and then rakes the hay.[I believe the ratio of tractors to the acres is good] You can never have to much iron but it is a major plus to involve the Wife in the operation. Her and I work well together and it makes life a real joy.

I think I see the problem. The picture reveals that all of your equipment is in beautiful condition. New paint, fresh tires, nice implements.

Let's say you saw Ms. Iowa at the Bingo Hall. She would be quite a feature. Now look at her in the Miss America Beauty Pageant lineup. Still the same girl, still beautiful, but they all are. See where your wife is coming from? Need to take her to see some real barn finds or fencerow sitters. Perhaps then she would understand.

I hope RickL ain't right, cause my restoration makes absolutely zero financial sense. But it makes me happy and keeps me busy. I will do a antique car someday. But for now it is a 48 year old Massey Ferguson. I don't even have a plot to farm... Yet.

My Dad didn't need a 450HP 2600lb convertible either, but damn does it make him smile!

Keep buying 'em, maintaining 'em, and restoring 'em, cause that clock only goes one way.

Cheers,

Aaron

Thank you Aaron.

I spent Sunday at the antique show in town with my wife.

Did I want to be there, heck no but thats the way you do it.

Its called give and take. Maybe thats why we have been married 31 years.

I have to agree with the misses on this one. Ye a it is just another tractor it is no big deal. You don't see it that way cause thats just what you into, but it still is just a tractor. At one time I had seven of the things and every piece of implement to do the field work with. fads are still fads. Now I own two and one of those is for sale. Only implement is hay stuff, everything else I sold. 90% of this stuff is only used at most two weeks out of the year any way and sets rest of the year. ties alot capital up that could be on interest or invested otherwise to make easier money. I also imagine your wife is employed to help support the hobby of farming. Times have changed. Especially for the insurance. It does'nt mean she does'nt get it its just thats what you are into in your eyes. Maybe she waiting for you to get a real tractor for her. I t would be green. Ha Ha have fun with you old red stuff

Your right on most accounts but one Rick.

I farm 1200 acres for a living and make money at it.

The money my wife makes goes to whatever she wants to spend it on.

If it weren't for health insurance she would not be working.

When the kids were in college and younger we needed the money and I had a full time job also.
But I farm more now and have 2 parttime jobs.

Every tractor I have has a job on the farm.

You may have a few to many tractors to suite some people ,but I have worked on farms around here that were 2000+ acres and he only used 3 tractors for everything . So I guess it comes down to what you like to spend your money on thats all .

If they are not making money and are still farming they are lieing.

There is no business that you can say you are making no money and stay in business.

Most wine that they're losing so they feel better when they get that Government check.

Yes I do take the government checks. I would be a fool not to. But if it weren't there we would all be in the same boat and we would make the same if we are actively farming.

The ones gaining the most are the landlords by the government programs.

Since we get the check we can bid a little more for the rent that the landlords collect.

Without government programs the rent would go down and we would make the same.

Just my thoughts. Gary

I think you should be commended for farming. I enjoy the old tractors but would not try making a living from farming. I think it takes lots of skills and risks to farm. Looks as though you cut the overhead by buying good older tractors instead of buying those new expensive tractors. Hopefully I did not offend you by my previous comment.

No Jrry you did not offend me at all.

I saw the LOL.

I was just a lttle worked up over some other comments.

But I hear the same thing from farmers and they are not in business very long if they are losing money. Right.

I guess I'm just a positive person and after looking death in the eye 1 1/2 years ago I will remain positive till the last breathe of air.

I know what you mean. We burried a friend of mine yesterday. He was 42. He and his wife adopted a baby girl on Wednesday and he had a heart attack and died early Sunday morning. Nobody had a clue that there was a problem.

Some of you green guys I just don't get. My best friend (he's all John Deere) bought a 4020 last fall at a neighbors auction. Just to run an auger. He has the latest and greatest, newest BIG John Deere equipment to run his 5000 acre row crop farm. This 4020 was a one owner tractor from a respectable retiring small farmer. A complete overhaul, new injector pump and injectors and a new fuel tank were needed this winter. He's got over $25,000 tied up in it now. This one was money out of the bank. All makes need work done even the mighty 4020.

hey gary...did you ever look in her closet at her shoes? how do they wear that many "at once"?

right now i'm re-doing "her" bedroom. it started off with painted walls, carpet on the floor, curtains on the windows, and a ceiling fan. when i'm done it'll have...painted walls, carpet on the floor, curtains on the windows, and a ceiling fan...all new. the old stuff (here when we bought the place) wasn't worn out or anything, she just wants it to be..."hers". "I" don't get it.

i guess it's all about balance. work on the house, mess around in my shop, spend some time alone, spend some time with her, give a little take a litte...been workin' for us for 32 years now. thanks for bein' concerned about me tho...

Wife is reading this over my shoulder.

She just said that she wears some of those shoes more of often than I drive some of those tractors.

And she can buy a heck of a lot of shoes for what one tractor cost.

Those are Mrs. Garys words not mine.

PS: she is laughing though.

One of my girlfriends asked me yesterday if I was going to give her a diamond today. I sent her a nice card with some flowers and hearts. She didn't speak to me this morning. Back to the ole drawing board.

If she knows about the other girl friends does she real expect a diamond.

I'm confused?
