OK I bought yet ANOTHER bushhog last night for $725.00. I had one I bought a year ago wich was a Bush Hog brand 406, this one is a Bush Hog brand 307.I for the first time hooked it up to the hitch thingy and drove it around. Now the 406 I have was on there first but I could not get the PTO shaft to fit it was too long. So I set that one aside and tried this other one I bought last night. The PTO did fit this time. So I cranked to the tractor up sat there for a moment and pull the BIg lever for the PTO..... and BANG!!! RIP!! Rattel and ROLL, after a few seconds the cutter was spining with hardly any noise. So I decided to take it for a spin to see what it would cut.

First off it seems as if the hitch either does one thing or the other. It is either all the way up or all the way down. I can't seem to keep it in the middle. How do I set the hitch up to where the hitch will stay about a quarter the way up.

When I was cutting I barley had the motor running faster than idle. Maybe around 900 RPMS, but the cutter was cutting very clean it seemed. Is it OK to run it this slow or does it really have to run at 1900 rpms?

I will go back up there with the tractor this Friday and stay the weekend again and hopefully take pictures this time!!

Is it possible you have a 540 rpm machine with a 1000 rpm shaft on it,with 1000rpm shaft in the tractor? If so, the blades will really twirl at low engine rpm.

Yeah but there are some mechnical dynamics to that, that is disadvantagouse. Mainly is the the fact that at 540 RPMS you are producing twice the torque as the 1000 RPM for the same give amount of HP. Think about it a 540 RPM PTO has the same Torque as a 100 RPM 6030!!!

Excuse me that last sentence is supposed to read...

The 540 PTO of a 4020 would have the same Torque as a 1000 PRM PTO 6030!!

sorry..

Run the tractor at 1900 rpm when using pto. Diesels run more efficent at rated rpms than idle. Idling is very bad for the engine. Ildling causes carbon build up in the cylinder walls that score the piston liner. The other issue might be not having enough coolant flow while your mowing at a idle, and overheat the engine.

If the mower is on a 3 pt. be careful not to lift it too high. The drive shaft can only run at so many degrees off of straight. It is best to run the PTO at 540 RPM. If it's lighter work you can increase travel speed a bit. Always engage the PTO at idle and then speed it up! Strange things have happened when running the PTO too slow. Dave

I'd highly recommend that you get the proper operator's manual for your 4020 before you damage it, an implement or yourself through improper operation or lack of knowledge of the tractor.

There are a lot of differences between a 5020 and a 4020. Getting the proper manuals for a tractor is the best money you'll ever spend.

In really tough cutting, most rotary cutters are meant to be run at 540 PTO RPM. Check your manual for the engine RPM to spin PTO at 540. Tom

Well engine has to run at 1900 RPM to give 540 PTO RPM.

One thing not to metion is that this is a VERY Heavy cutter and yeah I do seem to feel that it is back there! I will deffinetly convert this hog to the pull type. I already have the stuff to do it from the other hog.

Be sure your draft contol is in "D". It will be a small lever under the seat on an early model or at the base of a side console. If your blades are sharp it may not take many RPM to cut something dry and brittle like straw. No need to run it faster than needed for the job.
