1466 Int/Farm No oil pressure

I have a 1466 International Farmall diesel. Over the past couple of years, I have had problems when I start the engine, the oil pressure would not come up. But all I had to do is shut it off and restart it and it usually would come up, sometimes I would have to do it several times. The last time I tried to start the same thing, but I tried restarting many times and it will not come up at all. I took the oil pan off and expected to see the oil pump and the bottom of the motor, but all I see is a pickup tube. I am getting ready to order the service and parts manual from yesterday's tractors.

Can anyone give me some advice? Where is the oil pump located? Any idea why the pressure will not come up or comes up intermittenly?

Walt, after you get the problem solved, it wouldn't hurt to do like WJ said and rig up a manual gauge permanently. I did this with the 1086 years ago after the circuit board behind the elect gauge went bad, making the gauge suddenly read zero and scaring the bejeepers out of me. In the oil galley there is a port on the right rear side of the engine that you can tap in to. I think it's a 1/8 inch NPT hole. I just rigged the gauge so it is in front of the cab window by my right foot. Jim

Jim,

He's already configured that way. All large frame tractors in the 66 series had the manual gauge. The small framed tractors used the idiot light.

Think they started that electric gauge thing with the large 86s.

the pump is on the front cover behind the harmonic ballancer, they usally dont cause much trouble, the gear that drives the pump on the crank is proubly your culpert, you have to take the frame and frontend away to get to it, my guess the gear is spinning on the crank, the oil pump gear and the timeing gear are sweated on, we weld them on pulling motors to keep them from slipping, get a new or different relef valve could b simple fix

Thanks, I will try the relief valve first and then wait on the manuals.

If the oil pump drive gear is spinning on the crank shaft, can it be welded while in the engine, or do you have to take the engine/crank out?

yes we have replaced several oil pump gears with the crank in block, i would recomend a new pump and gear while your there, make sure you put your pickup tube back on before you put the pan on , once the pan is on you cant get the front of the tube lined up, also the 2 bolts wont go in the pickup tube with the ballancer on

Walt one thing I did some years back is made up a master gauge setup. Oil pressure should always be checked at the block with a good mechanical gauge. I purchased a gauge that read 0 to 100 and a grease gun hose measureing about 20 inches. Put the two together got a handfull of adapter fittings. This tool would work perfect for you on this tractor and it cost less than 40.00 dollars

I would check the relief valve on it, mine was stuck open on my 5088. It's above the oil cooler.

Can you tell for sure it has no oil pressure?

Does the engine rattle or how do you know?

Or is it just the gauge that is acting up?

Those sending units can cause trouble.
And so will the gauge.

I thought the gauge or sender was going bad and let it idle to long about a year ago. It actually started knocking loud and shut down. A couple of times it has started knocking and then the oil pressure would start coming up and then it would quiet down when it came up to pressure. So I am sure it is not the gauge or sender.

walt...then you are on the right track by ordering out your manual and parts. that does sound like a mechanical problem. i was just making sure you'd checked the "simple" things out first so you wouldn't be bustin' your back later tryin' to kick yourself in the butt...like i've done so many times.

Thanks Mike, I welcome any other input you may have. I was thinking that maybe this was a common problem with the 1466 and someone would say, yes this is your problem. 1st time to really work on it other than service.

well walt...from here on all i could do is guess cuz i'm a "fergie" guy. so i'll step back and let the farmall experts advise you. i still hope it's something simple for your sake...but i'd still order out the manuals. if you have them handy when you need them (and you will) they're worth their weight in gold. oh and...don't pass on the parts manuals either...they have part breakdown drawings in some of them that can be REALLY helpful.

walt...before i did anything, i think i'd check that guage...or replace it. i'd hate to think i went to all that trouble and then find out it was a faulty guage. just my thought...
