i'd like to thank you all for your barn stories, so many of which are so much like my own memories...and for all the barn pictures you posted. i was feeling pretty sad thinking about the old barns i use to work and play in that are long gone now, but hearing about and seeing these pictures has lifted my spirits about it. i have a feeling that there still will be many children that grow up with barn memories like mine in the coming years.

the only thing that still saddens me a little bit is, i want to go play once again, in every one of these beautiful barns you showed me pictures of, but i'd also still love to be able to shinny up a tree too. i guess that's why we have grandkids to watch at play?

thanks everyone, i feel better
-mike

I sold a large part of my farm 10 yrs. ago to a fella and I still tend it and the cattle . All the barns are getting holes in the roof and leaking .He says he cant aford to fix them , the man is worth mils. I know for a fact . A poor man would`nt let that happen .

Mike if you ever want to see huge old barns then you have to come out to the north Oregon coast and drive around the farms there.

I have seen some old barns that would hold the Spruce Goose with room to spare.

and real fancy one with huge cupolas on top to keep them dry.

Walt
PS some where is book about these old barns I may try to locate one.

Mike,it was an interesting topic.Thanks.I forgot to mention a couple of things.

A family member playing with matches in some hay (not me) burnt down the big old barn on our farm in 1963.I was 14 then. The place just didnt seem the same after that fire. You have to drive quite a few miles around here before you can find a barn.

My late Mom was born in 1908 and in 1913 her parents moved to a farm near Lindsborg,KS.Lightning had struck the barn shortly before they bought the farm so a new barn was built in 1913.It still stands today.

One mile down the road south is the old one room school (Mt Hope)that she and her 8 brothers and sisters attended. Its been there since the late 1800's and still stands today. The next time that I'm out to central Kansas I'll be taking some pictures.
