This swing bridge allows boat traffic to the intracoastal waterway to Brownsville while allowing RV and other traffic to Long Island Village, a 1000 place RV park. It's about a third of the way open. When fully open three barges can pass through side by side. To the right along the banks of the channel are shrimp and other boat repair facilities.

Kind of a unique set-up.

David in Wales. Do you have swing bridges auch as this?

There is one connecting the extreme tip of Manhattan island with the Bronx down in NY City. It was unused for years back in the early 80"s and then AMTRAK started running over it to access the Penn Station.

There is one at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire, England, I have relations there, it originally carried the Midland and Great Northan Joint Railway, now it carries the main A17 trunck road. It opens to allow shipping to get to the port of Wisbech in Cambridgeshire a few miles further down the river Nene.

That is an interesting bridge indeed, been there several times. Have you been up to Rio Hondo where the bridge that lifts straight up is yet? I recall several in Florida like it, but this one isn't used as often as those were. How about the hand pull ferry on up the Rio Grande, been there yet? It's near the town of Los Ebanos which is north of the McAllen and Mission area by about 25 miles or so on the way toward Zapata. You can park and watch them pull it across, or you can pay a small fee and either ride it or put your car on it and go over to the Mexico side. Unfortunatly there isn't anything to see at that crossing other than a dirt road, but it's still fun to see those guys pulling cars across the river by manpower. If you go, don't forget the camera!
BTW, I live in LaFeria and work in San Benito. Be sure and wave as you pass by.....that is if your on land and not in the air!

There is a railroad swing bridge near the mouth of the Genessee River (Rochester NY). It is parked and not used anymore, with the RR interrupted. I did see it operate 15 years ago, it is about 80 years old.

There is a seasonal bridge opening Sodus bay to boats in the warm months. A crane installs it in the fall and removes in the winter.
