Electrolysis HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLZ

Today i was going to try the Electrolysis for the fun of it to see if any thing happen"s well nothing did i got the charger and ever thing i gotthe rust off one spot on the peace i was wanting to get free of rust and the other the same way well i put 7 gallons in about 3x2 space about 10 inches deep i put the watter in there frist and then put SUPPER WASHING SODA in it and put the - on the part and the + on the junk steel and turnd on my charger to 50 amps to just see and i did 10 and 2 amps and sat there for aobut 10 mins nothing i messd with the clamps that did not work. The charger is a auto one and i dont know if that has any thing to do with it or not. Dose any one know what is wrong i shure dont. Thanks a bunch Carson

your charger must not have an an automatic shut off i use any type of transformer not a charger i have 2 good set ups going email me if you would like more info that goes for any one its been lonely in the in box somebum1@hotmail.com

Farmall A Boy,
You might have one of those automatic chargers that will NOT start up unless connected (correctly) to a battery that still has some minimal voltage at its terminals. If the charger won't burn a 12-Volt bulb/test lamp connnected across its output leads, but WILL charge a battery, then it's probably of that type. A safety feature, I think.

Like everyone else said, more surface area on your sacrificial scrap will help. If your sacrificial scrap has a lot of rust on the survace, I've found that it helps to take a wire brush or grinder and remove some of the rust. It's not necessary, but it does help start the process. I also notice that a "new" (clean) tank takes a little longer go get going. Be sure that you have minimal space between your sacrifical piece and the piece you want to clean, but don't let them touch. This will probably trip your charger's reset and then you will not get any current at all until you manually push the reset or it resets itself, depending on how your charger is made. An automatic charger should still work fine. Might add some more washing soda and plug it in and wait for a couple of hours and see if the process starts working. Once you get the hang of it, you will have something in the tank all the time.

Have been following information on Electrolysis here. Can't find Arm & Hammer super washing soda here in San Jose Calif. The latest issue (May 2007) of Rod & Custom has an article on electrolysis.Just had to add my 2 cents. Ytmag site is a daily read for me-great site.

Fareway Stores in Iowa carry it but this is a bit of a stretch for Calif.

Put about 3 more hunks of junk steel in there, all of them connected, and maybe a little more washing soda. It might take several days to remove the rust, but you should see considerable bubbling action almost immediately.

The sacrificial metal and the part to be cleaned should be within several inches of each other for best results. I use an old unintelligent battery charger on my setup. Generally I find that if everything is hooked up properly and you don't get the bubbles then more washing soda needs to be added. I find sheet metal covers from VCRs and old computers work well but need frequent cleaning. I do the small parts in one of my wife’s discarded stainless steel pans using it as the sacrificial metal. One key item I've seen people consistently do wrong. The sacrificial metal should have as much surface area as possible and surround the piece being cleaned.

hey rusty i never did see any bubbling so i knew something was not right i told my dad to put his hand in ther to see if it has a charge and he said your crazy. thanks rusty i dont know what i woud do with out this sight.

I don't have the whole process down pat yet either, but the last time I played with it I kept adding more scrap iron and the bubbling action increased everytime I added more.

i might hafe to go to my friends house thats a welder and raid his junk pile to get more scrap iron lol his wife wont care im cleening up there place lol im gonna try it agen tomarow and see what happends i was trying to do the fan gard cuz if i lost that peace that be no big deal at all. So the auto charger has nothing to do with it?

You don't need many amps. I use an old 12 volt power supply that is self regulating. I cleaned up some old tools using it and it only ran at about 1 amp.
I used a piece of scrap stainless and that worked well. I heard that it lasts longer than scrap iron, but not as available!
All the best, and remember it doesn't have to be boiling to work.
