Anybody that knows John Deere - will probably tell you how bad the 1010s and 2010s were (or are). Well, here's proof of one that runs, and doing something useful.

Had close to four feet of snow a week or so ago, and another 6" day before yesterday. Snow and drifts got so deep that two of my "summer" trucks - that I take off the road in the winter - were totally buried in snow. I dug part way in with a tractor-mounted snowblower. Then tried to pull my 88 diesel Blazer out - but it would not budge with my wheel tractor. So, tried my 1960 Deere 1010 crawler-loader. Worked much better than I thought it would. It was kind of a pretty day - and digital film is cheap.

Lucky your not down in that raveen ! I took our 440 out one year and went for one heck of a ride on those smooth pads. From then on it never moved out of the shed until the snow was gone.

Yeah, I normally never take a steel-tracked machine on snow or ice. I've got four crawlers - all put away for the winter. But . . . I got brave and took out the 1010 as a last resort - and I was pretty careful (a bit worried too). I've taken some wild sideways rides - and it didn't matter if they were flat loader pads or high-grouser dozer pads. When I worked for Deere, we used to install special high-headed ice-bolts every other pad that helped quite a bit.

At least you could drop that ripper to stop you. I was lucky I had the backhoe on our 440 I used the stabilizers to stop and hold it and was able to use the hoe to drag it back up the hill to the shed.

I enjoy your pictures.Glad to see you're getting dug out. You got a little more snow 2 weeks ago than I did (between Syracuse and Cortland) , but we've had enough since then and the wind has been helping out too. As far as 2010 and 1010 JD's , for several years I did some part time work at a horse farm near here and ran a gas 2010 with a loader. I would load a winters worth of manure each spring, ran a 7 ft finish mower and 6 ft brush hog and used it to push back snow in winter when needed. I actually liked it, it was a decent tractor to run and the only problem was the disc brakes werent much good.

Yes - I don't think there was ever a 1010 or 2010 wheel tractor made that had brakes that worked. They were (and are) death-traps on steep hills but fine for flatland.

We tried just about everything - in attempts to make them work - at several Deere dealerships.

Then Deere came up with a fix - the new generation 1020s and 2020s. What a difference!

1010 crawlers though, are pretty good little machines.

Funny you mention the thing about hills, we had a 2010 with a nice industrial like loader on it, loader was yellow as I recall. 1st tractor I ever was on, was 4 years old and popped er out of gear and rolled er a bit. The hired help was up on the hill behind the 2 barns, spreading manure and somehow put the 2010 up on the 2nd floor of the barn with the spreader hanging out the back. I can vaguely recall the hole in the wall, but not how they got it down, no one got hurt and the tractor was not damaged, real odd one, have to ask dad about that one again, nice size hole in the wood siding, floor was framed with heavy timber joists, probably why it did not collapse.
