The best to use is John Deere corn head grease. The gear box holds about 2 tubes. Its thicker than gear oil so it wont leak out.

Harley---if your 52 N has a serial # of 452913 or later, you will find the filler plug on the steering tube assembly between the dash and the steering column--there were a lot of changes to the locaion of these filler plugs as well as the steering gear boxes as they developed the 8N---They finally made it easy to get to the last year they built them---good luck--Tim

Harley--the bolt is right behind your proofmeter. If you remove the bolt you should see that it provides an opening into your steering box. What I did on my 51N was removed the bolt, and added a grease fitting where the bolt is. Use the JD Corn head grease and you will be able to adequately reach everything that needs to be greased.

My early 1949 8N had a 1/4" NPT plug on the right side of the steering box. I added a grease zirk there as well. On both of the tractors, NO OIL at all came out of the bolt hole when it was removed. After adding the grease, you should have a noticeable difference in the way your tractor steers. Tim

On the later 8n you take out one of the bolts on the side circle sector, and it goes thru to gear box. Cant remember if it top bolt or bottom.

John--I do not believe it is either of the bolts on the side circle sector. On my 51 N it is the bolt that secures the instrument panel support to the steering housing that goes thru to the gear box.

8n'r is right. it is the bolt that secures the dash panel braket to the steering box next to the proof meter. i removed every bolt on the steering box and they were all dead enders except that one bolt hole. i thank all of you for your help. harley
