When I was growing up in the 60s here in so. Mn. we had breakfast around 6:00 in the morning. Then after chores around 9:00 we went to house for lunch which was a snack of cheese or maybe a jelly sandwich. At 12:00 noon we had dinner at about 3:00 we had what we called a snack which was an orange or apple. around 5:30 or 6:00 we had supper. In evening we had a night snack which was ice creem or maybe a couple of cookies. Now they put coffee in port-a-cup grab a wrapped sweetroll to eat while driving to work. They do not call that breakfast. What they eat at 12:00 noon they call lunch. the snack they eat midafternoon is called afternoon break and what they eat at 6:00 in evening they call dinner. Question? When do they eat supper? Were we calling things by wrong name years ago or is that what everyone did? It is not kosher to use the word supper anymore as I foundout when we went to eat at an upscale restaurent at 6:30 one evening. Anxiously awaiting your reply. The Flying Belgian.

Here in Northern Kentucky:
First meal = Breakfast
Second meal = Dinner
Last meal= Supper
I kind of like breakfast for supper though.

mrs 730 came from Batavia Il they had dinner on sunday afternoon between 1 and 2 . she thinks we should have supper at 5:30 in afternoon. i tell her that's a late lunch as we would have something to eat before dad would do chores and milk . supper would be after milking was done. in summer during hay making supper would be pretty late as milking wouldn't be until 6 or later. what time do you guys have supper?

I used to work with an engineer who did not take himself too seriously.

He always said, "Where I come from, engineers drive trains, stock's in the field, and dinner's at noon".

Years ago I asked my grandmother, who knew everything about country life from being raised on the farm, how this worked. She said breakfast was in the morning, dinner was a big meal at noon IF it was in the house. If the men were in the field at noon, she brought them lunch. Supper was in the evening.

It's like the word "pop". In the midwest it meant grape soda, Coke, dr pepper, or whatever. Now that I live in the south anything carbonated is termed "coke". What kind of "coke" do you want? is what they say in the south. I just want to hear someone say pop again!

nothing has happened to supper here in muskogee, oklahoma, it is still the evening meal. all my life it was breakfast in the morning, dinner at noon, and supper in the evening. i like to argue with my sister in california because out there they call the evening meal dinner.

When we were growing up it was breakfast, dinner, supper. I see no reason to change. If I don't get dinner till 6:00 PM, I'm pretty hungry.

Funny that you bring this up, my cousin and I were having this same argument this last hunting season. I grew up having breakfast, coffee(around 9am), dinner(noon), lunch(around 3pm), and supper(around 6:30).
I`m from rural central MN, dairy country. I think the meal times reflect the average day on a farm.
My cousin is from the metro area, he has breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I asked him the same question you asked "when do you have supper?" He thinks dinner and supper are interchangeable. I guess it throws our whole system off when he doesn`t start his day with breakfast, and doesn`t get up til after we`ve had morning coffee. Different strokes

Call me crazy, and remember I'm a young-gun. Around my house, breakfast in the morning, "lunch" at noon-ish, and "dinner" in the evening between 6 and 8pm or so. We don't really have little meals in between the big three, but I wouldn't mind if we did : )

Hey...Flying Belgian! What part of Southern Minnesota did you grow up in? I was raised in Winona County, near the little town of Altura. We always at "dinner" at noon...and "supper" at 6:30 or 7 PM. For me...my evening meal is still called "supper"!

I am glad to know supper still exists most folks around here in hickville even refer to it as dinner nowadays and have lunch at dinner time. When I worked as a carpenter I carried my dinner too work in a dinner bucket folks refer to that as a lunch box now. I guess it is a sign of the times.

I will have to have my wife read this topic!!! I farm with my Dad and we call "Supper, supper" and not dinner!! She gives me a hard time for saying supper. I always tell her if there's no such thing as supper...than why do churchs have "suppers" for fund raisers. I never get an answer back.

Yup, when I was growing up at my uncles farm, it was a peice of toast at 6 am, then after morning chores and milking was done, bout 8:00, went in for breakfast, ussually pankakes, eggs, bacon. Dinner was at 12:00, family meal, lots of food, lunch was a bologna sandwich, a small bag of chocolate chips cookies, and a fresh jug of ice water, out in the feild- 10 min tops. Supper was 6 pm, then after milking cows we went in for our "bedtime snack". Ussually ice cream malts o cookies and milk. These days its coffee a 5am walking to the barn, breakfast whever I get back in in, lunch at noon, supper at 5:30, bedtime beersnack(s) at 8 pm.

I don't care what it's called, as long as I'm called in for it.

Really around here the big meal of the day is dinner, and lunch or supper is the other meal. Breakfast is in the morning whatever it consists of.

supper isn't a southern thang. i grew up in northern indiana and supper was the evening meal. "dinner" was something we only had on sunday...a big meal in the middle of the afternoon and then no supper, just a snack or something left over from dinner if you got hungry in the evening. the rest of the week it was breakfast, lunch, and supper. here in the south, lunch is called dinner...but mostly it seems it refers to a time of day. when you ask when someone will be in or something will be done the answer is always either before or after dinner...there is no numbered time down here like..."around two o'clock"...that's just referred to as "after dinner". took me a while to get used to that.

I'm with you. In our family in southern Indiana, we had breakfast, lunch, and supper. Unless we had a large meal like Sunday dinner, Easter dinner, Thanksgiving dinner; when depended on when it was ready. One of my sisters usually does family dinners now, and if she says we are going to eat at 2:00 we can figure on 4:00, but it will still be dinner (and we will be hungry).

I remember this coming up some time ago. In our family, the "big" meal of the day was dinner- On Sundays, it was about 1 or 2 in the afternoon, after church. Weekdays it was in the evening. We might also call the evening meal supper, interchangeably. Most of us only had 3 meals a day, so what do you do with 4 names?

And I don't "do Brunch" either :)

Wow all the snacks and ice cream and such between meals, all I got was a stick or straw to gnaw on between meals. the old picture of a farm boy with a piece of straw in his mouth has a real basis :)
