Chevy 6.5 diesel

I have a chance to buy a 94 Chevy one ton dually with a 6.5 turbo diesel and wondered if anyone had any experience good or bad. I wanted to buy something newer but the money is just too high right now. Thanks.

Jon,

We bought a '95 C2500 suburban with the 6.5 and for the first 80,000 miles or so, we went through probably four injection pumps and a couple lift pumps too--all under warranty. At about 120,000 miles we had the injection pump replaced (under extended warranty) and its been running fine since. Right now we're at close to 250,000 miles and it starts up and runs like the day we bought it. I believe whatever Stanadyne came up with on the pump design they did something right. It's likely that the engine you're considering has had one or more pump replacements in its lifetime so maybe you'll be OK. If you get it, obviously do an oil & filter change (Rotella 15/40) and change the transmission fluid & filter and also the fuel filter. Under no circumstances should you use additive except that supplied (and approved) by Stanadyne. The emulsified water that some additives "create" will damage the pump. Also, the oil filter sending unit is another slight aggravation--this also controls voltage to the lift pump and it burns up frequently--this will starve the fuel system under heavy load. The engine will run OK on a near full tank but best to R & R the switch ASAP. I keep a spare onboard and have changed more than one on the side of the road. Bottom line--if the engine runs good, you should be OK for awhile. Before buying, take the truck on a test run and get up to 45 and accelerate heavy for a minute or so--see if any SES lights come on.

I had a 6.5 in a 95 2500. The injection pump went at 96000 and the heavy auto transmission went at 130000 the first time and at 10000 and a year later it went again. I traded it for a 2000 that had 56000 on it and shortly after purchasing it the injection pump went on it. The computer records showed it had been changed before I Bought it. It went again this past December at 91000. So be ware of the 6.5 diesel. They have problem with those electronic injection pumps.

I would have to say that 95% of the IP's that fail are simply a sensor and not actually the IP. Or the PMD that fails, sadly though the mechanics at most dealerships or shops don't realize this and swap out IP's. Simple fix is to relocate the PMD out away from the IP and all the heat that is there. Now, the 6.5's aren't the greatest pullin engine but I love mine and at nearly $30k for a used Duramax I will keep my '96 with 174k on her for a while yet since it only cost me $5700.

Amen Dale,my 97 3500 was a dandy driving truck but I was on my 3rd injection pump when I sent her down the road.I miss the room and driveabliity but not that boat anchor under the hood.If by some chance Ford could get Cummins to work with them that would be one heck of a truck.We have a 03 6.0 that is junk always has been.

I have never had one myself but knew a guy who did. He did everything with it. Pulled wagons, goosenecks, all kinda stuff. Don't know how many miles it had on it but he got sick is in a nursing home and the fellow who bought it is still driving it. By the same token I have seen at least a half dozen that were not worth a nickel. Stayed in the shop. Guess it was a bad design Stay Safe

The ones prone to crackin the block were the '97-'99 years. Sometime in '99 they solved that problem.

This engine has a bad reputation but they arn't all that bad. The good thing is people have a hard time selling then and you can get them dirt cheap. The early ones had cooling problems and the last few years for that engine was pretty darn good. If you buy it modify the air box to let in more air. Take the aluminum plenum off which is the part that goes from the turbo to the top of the intake manifold. It breaths thru these tiny slits that need to be filed open.You can also take a small drum sander and clean and open up the end that goes to the turbo boot. This will wake it up and make it run cooler and just plain better.

I have to agree, more-or-less with what Matt Weltz stated. I've got over 20 trucks with 6.2 and 6.5 diesels. My 87 diesel Suburban was used for 520,000 miles pulling a stock-trailer - mostly on flat highways though. At 520,000 the block and crankshaft went to pieces. My son put another engine in it and he's still driving it.
If I had to do some serious towing - e.g. 8000 lb.s trailer and up - and had some hills to climb- that's a different story. I use my Ford with the IH 7.3 turbo diesel - it is much better - for that purpose. And, of course the 5.9 Cummins is better than all of them - it has to be - it a totally different class of engine. Cummins 5.9 is a MD engine, GM 6.2s, 6.5s, Ford IH 6.9s, 7.3s, and 6.0s are LD engines. I can't say anything negative about the Cummins other than the trucks they are planted into (and the price). 6.5 had a heavy block first few years it was made - that was shared with 6.2. Then it got cheapened and lightened to the point where it had some cracking issues - with the heads, main-webs in the block and one rear cylinder wall. Also, it had some real bad reliablility issues with the 1994 - on DS2 electronic injection controls. By this point in time, the pump problems been ironed out (mostly). Funny thing is - now - the same company making the Ford IH blocks is casting the new 6.5 GM blocks (mostly for military and marine use). The new company is Remy International - both having roots from the former Delco-Remy - and International Harverster. And, new heavy-duty 6.5 heads are being made in China.

I donno about others, we have a 94 turbo diesel 3/4T 4x4 w/168,000 miles, that we use to pulled 4 horse, horse trailer W/large tack room, also a 16 ft trailer w/4 foot side racks to haul wood out of the mountains(3 cord of wood). Had one problem, but can't remember exactly what it was, as it was under GM recall.

Make sure that the wire harness that runs across firewall, behind the engine, is kept away from the exhaust. Can catch a fire, Don't ask!!!

If you are looking for a ridea round truck it might be ok. If you want to do any kind of serious towing you'd be better off with a 350 or 454 as you won't have to worry about cracked blocks and heads and over heating. I had one of the latest ones made and it was fine for using as a car, but when it came time to do serious work I'd hop in one of my Dodges.

Everybody gets a melon of a truck once in a while. My aunt has two heavy-duty 3/4 tons both with the 6.5 turbo. The one with the higher miles has never given her any trouble and the other one (with lower miles) is in the shop. For some reason Chevy had some trouble with this motor but not all of them are bad.
