I bought a homemade trailer used last year. All I brought was a bill of sale from the previous owner with the amount paid. I paid my sales tax and one-time trailer plate fee that we have now in Michigan, and I got a title in the mail in a couple weeks for an "assembled trailer".

Damn its nice to live in the west. i made 3 trailers from old parts and all i did was put a SMV sign on the back. Its also nice to own a farm, we get away with murder when it comes to trailers. Was in town the other day to pickup some fence material at the local outlet and a cop drove past me didn't even look at the trailer or me just drove right by.
Walt PS while there I picked up a set of magnetic trailer lights to put on it.

Titles are not required for trailers in Ohio. For license, you only need a weigh slip, available at any certified scales, and if the trailer was purchased, you need a bill of sale for the trailer. If you built the trailer you will be asked for a fair value for the sales tax. If the trailer is for farm use the sales taxes are not required. That is all there is to it... Gene

we make 3 to 5 a year all sizes and in wi. it's all you do is apply for a title for a home built they send you a form for inspection by any cop they check lights and some might look at the brakes [1 time in 5 years ]send form back in and they send you a ser. number plate with special rivets that you must use it put ser. number plate on with after you have it on go back to a cop and have them see that it's on with the rivets and they sign the form and you send it back to the DMV and were ready to go. i go to our local barrny fife takes 5 minn.

Not sure about OH but here in IN my cousin worked at the BMV and when I built our gooseneck she told me that all I had to do was show them a photograph and tell them that all the materials used were already on-hand. Of course this is a small town branch and things go easier there.

In Ohio, as in most states nowdays, you are going to have to prove that you paid sales tax on everything that you used to make the trailer (it's the same when you build a boat). Sometimes they might just do a casual look at the receipts for major items, other times you will get quizzed on every nut and bolt.
If it was a boat and they were unsatisfied with your paperwork, you would be taxed at the full value of a similar commercially built boat.
Their careers depend on tax revenue so you know that they are going to collect as much as possible.

Many years ago I ran a garbage truck. If you keep your eyes open when dumping containers you can find all kinds of neat stuff. I wanted to build a small two wheeled trailer so I watched for related items in trash. After about 6 months I had found everything I needed including hubs, wheels, tires, steel for frame wood for bed and sides. went to license it in Mn. they needed to have reciepts for purchased items so they could put value on it and charge me accordingly for title. I said I have no reciepts as nothing was purchased. They asked where I got the materials. I told them I found them in the trash and that was unecceptable for them. They concluded I must have stole the trailer and was trying to title it in my name. Next they got the sheriff office involved to find rightful owner. took me about 2 months to explain and satisfy sheriffs office that I did not steel trailer but rather found it in the trash. I finally did get license for it but what a comotion. One would think I'm the only person who ever found a trailer in the trash.

The best way to be sure you do everything right is to call the Ohio DMV.
